Wenger expressed his admiration for Modric during a visit to the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich, where an exhibition features football icons, including Modric. The exhibition, titled Building a Footballer, has been open since May and runs through October 31. It retraces the journeys of football legends, including Modric. The Croatian international’s path has been remarkable: once a refugee child, he overcame great challenges in pursuit of his dream. For Wenger, Modric’s story embodies the very essence of football. “It’s always a pleasure to watch him play, and everyone who loves football must hold him in the highest regard,” stated Wenger, currently FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development.
Modric, a legend in his own right
Although Modric never played under Wenger, the two met numerous times, particularly when Modric played for Tottenham, Arsenal’s rival club. At 39, Luka Modric continues to play at the highest level—an impressive feat in the football world. Last week, during the match against Celta Vigo, he became both the oldest player in Real Madrid’s history and the club’s most decorated. As captain of Los Merengues, he hopes to lead his team to victory in tomorrow’s Clasico against Barcelona.
For Wenger, Modric’s example is a source of inspiration. The Frenchman believes that the former Spurs player’s success comes in part from waiting for the right moment to shine. “Becoming a footballer was a dream back then, but sometimes having to wait a little longer, as he did, strengthens your motivation and passion. When it doesn’t come quickly, you have to be patient,” he added.
