Having retired from international football a few months ago, Angel Di Maria has found a way to shine during this international break. In a media appearance, the former Madrid player shared his truths about the comparison between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
It’s definitely one of those topics that will never reach a consensus. Two global phenomena of the last 20 years, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have achieved extraordinary feats. While the two former rivals in Spanish La Liga have engaged in fierce competition for years, fueled by heated debates to determine who is the best, the topic continues to generate ink to this day. While some avoid naming the GOAT between CR7 and La Pulga due to the complexity of the subject, Angel Di Maria and the majority of Argentinians do not hesitate to make a decision.
Di Maria’s new take on the subject

In a discussion with Clank.media, the former Argentine midfielder, who played for Real Madrid between 2010 and 2014 (190 matches for 36 goals), explains why he always puts Lionel Messi above Cristiano Ronaldo. After playing alongside the two great rivals in modern football history, Angel Di Maria reveals in the podcast that his compatriot, who currently plays for Inter Miami, doesn’t have to force himself to be the best, unlike the 39-year-old Portuguese veteran.
“Cristiano is all about work, work, and more work. But Messi is pure talent, a gift from God. He doesn’t need to do more to be the best,” El Fideo told Clank.media. As always, this kind of statement doesn’t sit well with CR7’s die-hard fans. Right after Di Maria’s confession, several Madrid fans provided reasons to refute that Ronaldo forces things by working hard.
They argue that if only hard work and ethics could allow players to score over 900 goals, dominate the Champions League outrageously, or be in phenomenal shape at nearly 40 years old, several footballers like CR7 would exist worldwide. Given that we are unlikely to see other players like Messi or Cristiano anytime soon, perhaps it’s time to crown both legends as the GOAT and put an end to this endless debate that often spoils things.
