An inspiration of genius. Rodrygo Goes scored an exceptional goal in the 53rd minute to put Real Madrid on the road to victory over Pachuca in the Intercontinental Cup final.
With Real Madrid already leading 1-0 thanks to a Kylian Mbappé goal in the first half, Carlo Ancelotti’s men went into the second half with the intention of adding to their lead. And it was in the 53rd minute that the spark was lit, once again, by a perfect combination between Madrid’s stars.
Rodrygo Goes found Kylian Mbappé in the middle of the park, just in front of the box, and took the ball with confidence. With the Mexican defence well in place, the young Brazilian prodigy showed off his skills with a series of exhilarating dribbles. Short hooks, a change of pace, and a masterful curling shot: it was all there. The ball flew towards the right corner of the goal, leaving goalkeeper Carlos Agustín Moreno helpless.
VAR invites itself to the show
However, Madrid’s euphoria was briefly suspended by a VAR intervention. At issue was a potential obstruction by Jude Bellingham, who allegedly blocked the Pachuca keeper’s view of Rodrygo’s shot.
The referee, after reviewing the footage, finally validated the goal, ruling that Bellingham had not interfered with the action. The jubilant stadium was able to savour this moment of magic. This goal was not just an individual achievement. It illustrates Rodrygo Goes’ rise to prominence this season, often overshadowed by the likes of Vinícius and Mbappé. Already the scorer of a gem against Rayo Vallecano the previous weekend, the Brazilian is showing that he is much more than a mere addition to this attacking armada.
