Two years after his free transfer from Real Madrid, Marco Asensio, currently at Aston Villa in the Premier League, has spoken about his time at the Spanish capital. The La Roja international made a number of revelations about PSG, the club he signed for immediately after the end of his contract at Madrid.
Marco Asensio is not hiding his feelings! Leaving Real Madrid in 2023 was a difficult decision. After seven seasons and several trophies, he was hoping to extend his Madrid adventure, but negotiations were not successful. In an interview with Miror, the Spaniard made a confession.
‘When I left Real Madrid, I felt that PSG was the next step in my career, where I could feel more comfortable and develop further,’ he confessed. Far from being a key part of Luis Enrique’s plans, Asensio quickly felt the need for a change of scenery. ‘The coach made his decisions and I needed to play and enjoy myself on the pitch again,’ he said.
Asensio’s ambition at PSG was clear: to establish himself as a playmaker in a prestigious squad. However, he found himself on the back foot and struggled to get regular game time. Despite initial promises, his role never lived up to expectations. ‘He saw me as a number 10, that was important to me,’ he explains, but the reality on the pitch was very different.
The lack of opportunities led him to think deeply about his future. There was no longer any question of waiting for a hypothetical starting berth. He needed a new challenge, a project where he could really express himself.
Aston Villa, a clear choice
So Asensio made a bold decision to join Aston Villa on loan. A surprising choice for some, but a perfectly logical one for him. ‘I’ve known Unai (Emery) for years. His style suits my football and he’ll be able to get the best out of me,’ he says with conviction. Contrary to what you might think, the Spaniard does not see this transition as a step backwards. ‘It’s not a step backwards. It’s a big challenge for me,’ he says. For him, the Premier League represents a competitive environment where he can rediscover his best form and prove that he is still a top-class player.
