On the eve of the crucial La Liga clash with Girona, Carlo Ancelotti answered journalists’ questions. With the absence of Jude Bellingham confirmed following his controversial sending-off against Osasuna, the probable resting of Valverde and the recent injury to Ceballos, the Real Madrid coach must rethink his squad if he is to continue battling at the top of the table. Here are the highlights of his press conference.
Are you in contact with Asencio to deal with the media pressure and the excessive praise surrounding him?
Carlo Ancelotti: I haven’t spoken to him about it specifically. He remains very discreet and focused, just as he was when he started out with Castilla. He works in silence and remains attentive to the comments we make to help him progress, which is our approach with every young player. He still has a few things to perfect, but what I find remarkable about him is his mental strength. He has already proved that he can make the difference in difficult matches.
Is this a season in which Barça and Atlético are as strong favourites as you for the title?
The Spanish league is always tough. This year, three teams are within a point of each other. They’re all top teams. We can expect an intense battle right up to the final day.

How is Alaba doing? Are you planning to play him tomorrow?
He’s fine, as are most of the players who have played recently. I still have to assess who needs rest to avoid injuries. Alaba could get his chance tomorrow, depending on the final training session.
A year ago, you said that La Liga was not ‘adulterated’. Is your opinion still the same?
Absolutely. I want this championship to remain as honest as possible. I don’t dwell on rumours or social networks. I’m not even in the habit of looking at tweets and that sort of thing.
Your team has had its ups and downs in recent months. How do you feel personally?
I feel supported, both by the club and by my players. That’s all I need. In football, not everyone can be satisfied at the same time. The important thing is that Real Madrid, its players and its fans recognise my work.
What is your reaction to Bellingham’s two-match suspension?
We have to respect the decision. The club will appeal to try and reduce the sanction. For the time being, we’re going to organise things differently and play another player in his place.
Valverde has been playing at right-back recently. Are you going to rest him?
He’s had a good run of games. If he needs a breather, I won’t hesitate to leave him on the bench. Nothing is ruled out for tomorrow’s game.

How do you rate the forthcoming European derby?
As always, it will be intense and balanced. The two teams involved are at a similar level. At this stage of the competition, it’s all about the details.
Your team has taken just two points from nine in La Liga. What did you miss?
Sometimes luck just isn’t there. But we’ve put in solid performances in our last three games. With the right mindset, results always follow.
What is your approach to the match against Girona?
We’re at a crucial point in the season. We need to reproduce the intensity we showed against Manchester City. Every mistake can be costly, as the competition is so fierce. We want to stay in the title race right to the end.
