Real Madrid take on AC Milan in the Champions League at the Bernabeu on Tuesday evening. On the eve of this clash of the titans, Carlo Ancelotti appeared at his traditional press conference. While we were expecting him to talk about the clash with the Rossoneri and, above all, the controversy surrounding the 2024 Golden Ball, the Transalpine coach dwelt on what he believes to be the most important issue: the Valencia tragedy. The Real de Madrid editorial team brings you the highlights of the Casa Blanca coach’s comments.

Ancelotti on the AC Milan clash: ‘The feeling is to talk as little as possible about football. As I said, that’s our job. We have an important and special match against Milan, but in the background’.

Ancelotti on the Valencia tragedy: ‘There are many ways of helping, but I think this one is different. Football had to stop and then football can and must help. Everyone was clear. Nobody wanted to play. It seemed like the right decision. But we’re not in charge. It’s the directors who make that decision. It affects everyone because you hear about it, you read about it… and what happened was terrible. We’ve prepared ourselves because we’re professionals and we’re going to try to win, of course. That’s what we have to do. It’s been a week since this tragedy happened, we’re sad… that’s the emotion we have, we’re very close to all the people who have been affected. I hope that this can be resolved quickly, and I hope that you can understand that talking about football is very complicated. We are part of this country and this affects a lot of people. Out of respect for you and also not to disrespect people, I’m going to try to keep it simple because I don’t feel like talking about football. For me, tomorrow is a very special match… but I’ll try to talk about it as little as possible.

Ancelotti sends a message to those responsible for the Valencia tragedy: ‘It’s obviously normal for them to be frustrated by what happened. I don’t want to give my opinion or assess what the politicians did this week. I don’t have any memories, just the sadness of seeing so many people affected. This is 2024, with all the information we have in the world…. and we are not in a position to repair this kind of tragedy. I can’t assess it, I have to do my best to try and help. What I think is that football is a party, but you can do it when you’re well. If your family is well, you celebrate. But when people are not well, you don’t need to celebrate. Football has to stop because football is not the most important thing… of the least important things in life’.

Ancelotti on the Best Coach Award: ‘I’m happy, the Ballon d’Or is over and we must congratulate all the winners’.

Ancelotti on Vinicius Jr: ‘He’s normal like us. Fortunately, we didn’t play that match… He trained well, like everyone else.

Ancelotti on the squad: ‘It’s been a difficult week because the atmosphere is not normal… but that has nothing to do with the Ballon d’Or. The sadness and the different atmosphere are due to what’s happening in Spain.

Ancelotti insists on Vinicius after the Ballon d’Or: ‘I repeat, Vinicius is sad like us, but not because of the Ballon d’Or, but because of what he sees at Valencia’.

Ancelotti does not want to force the players to take a break: ‘No, the power we have is 0. We can’t make any decisions. All the coaches had the same idea, but they had to do it without wanting to.
