In a press conference ahead of the 16th round of La Liga between Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés, Carlo Ancelotti was highly complimentary of Raúl Asensio. While several players are performing well, the Madrid coach has openly revealed the new status of the 21-year-old defender.

If there is one player enjoying phenomenal moments at Real Madrid towards the end of this year, it is Raúl Asensio. A reserve team player for several years, the 21-year-old centre-back has seen his situation change abruptly this season following Eder Militão’s injury. Called up by Carlo Ancelotti for the match against Osasuna a few weeks ago, the native of Las Palmas came on just before half-time after Militão suffered a cruciate ligament rupture. Taking advantage of Aurélien Tchouaméni’s absence—who had been filling in at centre-back—Asensio impressed everyone.

Ancelotti’s major revelation

Against Liverpool, where he was not expected to shine, the 21-year-old surprised many with his determination, composure in challenges, ball distribution, and overall performance. Once again fielded against Leganés and Getafe, the reserve team star confirmed his growing reputation. As previously mentioned, a new contract with a salary increase is awaiting Raúl Asensio, which allows Real Madrid to abandon plans to recruit a central defender in January. On Tuesday, Carlo Ancelotti officially declared the Madrid fans’ new favourite as a mainstay.

In a press conference ahead of the 16th round clash against the Basques of Athletic Bilbao from Nico Williams, who remain a top team in the league, the 65-year-old coach made a big statement: “Asensio has proven to be a reliable centre-back. He does not lack knowledge in his role. He is tall, confident, and enthusiastic about everything. He has contributed a lot in these four matches. If one day I have to bench him, I will need to think about it carefully,” said Carlo Ancelotti.

This is excellent news for the 21-year-old. Today, it is clear that Real Madrid has found its new star in defence. Florentino Pérez and his team can now focus on strengthening other areas of the squad.
