Real Madrid could have picked up at least a point had Vinicius Jr’s first-half goal not been disallowed. In the 22nd minute, the Brazilian delightfully dribbled past the opposition defence before unleashing an unstoppable curling shot. The ball ended up in the back of the net, but VAR broke Madrid’s euphoria.
The referees ruled that Kylian Mbappé had fouled Lozano prior to the action. The decision was met with incomprehension by the Real Madrid players and staff, who were furious in front of their bench.
‘Trust me”: the referee tries to calm Vinicius down
Vinicius, visibly annoyed, asked the referee for an explanation. According to Movistar+, the referee replied: ‘It’s a foul, it’s a foul. Listen to me. Trust me.’ A justification that did not convince the Madrid camp, who were convinced that they had been the victims of an unfair decision.
Despite several chances in the second half, Madrid’s forwards never found the net. The defeat further complicates Carlo Ancelotti’s task, especially as Atlético Madrid remain in the hunt for the title. Real Madrid will now have to react quickly if they are not to see their main rivals gain the upper hand. Frustration is high, but the season is far from over.
