Beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night in the Champions League, Real Madrid are slipping down the table. After the defeat, Luka Modric spoke out.

After two defeats to Lille and AC Milan, Real Madrid lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. Carlo Ancelotti’s men, without the injured Vinicius Jr, offered nothing in attack despite the presence of Kylian Mbappe.

Kylian Mbappe should have been leading the attack against the Reds, but his game was a complete shambles. He even missed a penalty that could have put Real Madrid back in front. He is normally targeted after the defeat and Luka Modric came to his defence at the end of the match.

Luka Modric again calls for patience for Mbappé

After the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, Luka Modric spoke to Movistar. The Real Madrid captain first came to the defence of Kylian Mbappe, already targeted as the number 1 culprit.

‘Mbappé? We can see that, he’s training well and he’s confident. Sometimes it doesn’t work, like today with the penalty. But we have confidence in him and I’m sure Kylian will end up doing what’s expected of him.  We have to be confident and do better. There are difficult matches, like against Atalanta, but it’s still early days,’ Modric began.

‘We’re not used to losing, but this is the Champions League and these are difficult matches. There are still three matches to go. We need to improve and I think we will. We’ve had good momentum in the last two games in La Liga. In the first half, we played well and the penalty could have won us the game, but we didn’t take advantage of it. With their second goal, we were almost lost. In defence, we were compact, with very tight lines. We made a lot of counter-attacks, but in the final third we lacked a little more effectiveness. That’s what made the difference,’ added the 39-year-old Croatian midfielder.
