Benzema Defends Alonso Amidst Real Madrid’s Struggles

Karim Benzema has come to the defense of Xabi Alonso, asserting that the coach is not responsible for Real Madrid‘s recent poor form. The former striker, who enjoyed a successful 14-year tenure at the club before his departure to Al Ittihad in July 2023, emphasized that the onus lies with the players themselves. With mounting pressure on Alonso following two consecutive defeats—first a 2-0 loss at home against Celta Vigo, followed by a 2-1 setback against Manchester City in the Champions League—Benzema’s comments carry significant weight.

As Real Madrid prepares for their upcoming match against Alaves, the team’s performance has raised eyebrows, particularly given the star-studded roster featuring Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo. Benzema pointed out that while these players are among the elite in world football, they must establish a better understanding of their roles on the pitch. “What they’re lacking is simply a connection,” he stated in an interview with L’Equipe. “Bellingham needs to understand that he’s the attacking midfielder, not the goalscorer. Mbappé is the goalscorer, not the attacking midfielder. Vinícius isn’t a defensive midfielder; he’s a left winger.”

Tactical Misalignment and Player Dynamics

Benzema’s insights delve into a deeper issue within the squad—namely, the misalignment of tactical roles and individual responsibilities. He believes that as long as players grasp their specific duties, the team can thrive. “As long as they all know what to do on the pitch, that’s it,” he remarked, highlighting that these are players capable of greatness when they operate cohesively.

The former Real Madrid star also touched upon the complexities of managing egos within such a talented squad. “It’s difficult because everyone has their own personality and characteristics,” Benzema explained. “They all want to be the best, so it’s a bit complicated.” His comments underscore a broader trend in modern football where individual accolades often overshadow collective success.

The Challenge of Modern Football

Benzema observed that contemporary players frequently prioritize personal performance over team dynamics, which can lead to friction. “There isn’t a more experienced player who can tell Bellingham, Mbappé, or Vinicius that they’re doing something wrong,” he lamented. He noted that this lack of communication among players is evident on the field: “The players don’t talk to each other anymore. And it shows.”

This disconnect is particularly concerning given the club’s ambitions in both La Liga and Europe. With high expectations from fans and management alike, Benzema’s reflections serve as both an indictment of current issues and a call for unity as Real Madrid seeks to return to winning ways.

As they gear up for their next challenge against Alaves, one question looms large: Can this squad find its rhythm in time to salvage their season? The answer may very well depend on how well they can adapt to each other’s playing styles and communicate effectively on the pitch.
