Getafe manager José Bordalás was visibly upset following his team’s 1-0 loss to Real Madrid on Sunday night, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the officiating that saw his side reduced to nine men. The match, marked by crucial decisions from the referee, left Bordalás lamenting the impact of these calls on his players’ hard work. Speaking in a post-match interview with Movistar, he stated, “All our efforts were wasted. The boys gave their all.”
This season has posed numerous challenges for Getafe, but the red card shown to Allan Nyom in the second half proved particularly pivotal. With Nyom’s dismissal, Getafe was forced to navigate the final minutes of the match with only ten players and eventually nine. Bordalás did not hold back in his criticism of the decision, arguing that it was exaggerated by Real Madrid’s Vinícius Jr. He remarked, “Vinícius is touching his face while pretending to be assaulted. For me, that’s not a red card; at most, a yellow.”
Controversial Decisions Spark Outrage
Bordalás also pointed out that the referee failed to provide any explanation for the red card on the pitch and noted that VAR did not intervene to review the incident. “No, they didn’t tell me anything because VAR didn’t intervene. They felt it was a red card and didn’t need to review it,” he explained. He further criticized a previous yellow card given to Kiko for an alleged foul on Vinícius, which he claimed was unwarranted and disrupted their game plan.
Frustration Over Inconsistent Officiating
The Getafe coach expressed frustration over what he perceives as inconsistent treatment of smaller clubs when facing top-tier teams like Real Madrid. “Yes, of course. I’m not judging, but there were very similar fouls in the first half that didn’t result in a card,” he said, highlighting a disparity in officiating standards.
In the closing moments of the match, tensions flared on the sidelines when Bordalás had a heated exchange involving both Vinícius and Jude Bellingham. He recounted, “Vinícius came to me and said, ‘Very good substitution.’ Then Bellingham came and said something to me, and I told him to play along and not talk too much. Vinícius doesn’t have to come and provoke me.”
Despite finishing the match with two fewer players, Getafe nearly equalized late through Kamara’s effort—an opportunity that Bordalás found pride in despite the circumstances. “Curiously, yes. We had it with Kamara. It’s a shame. I’m not talking about justice, but it would have been a great reward for the boys,” he concluded. “They gave everything against a tough opponent like Madrid.”
