Thibaut Courtois delivered a remarkable performance at Anfield, yet it wasn’t enough to secure a victory for Real Madrid against Liverpool. The Belgian goalkeeper spoke to Movistar Plus after the match, expressing his disappointment while acknowledging the team’s efforts. “It’s unfortunate; I tried to support the team,” he stated. “In the second half, we committed too many fouls near our box. They are strong on set pieces, and that’s how they scored.”
Despite the defeat, Courtois highlighted some positive aspects of their defensive display. “We defended fairly well, but we struggled with the ball in the final third. We found it challenging to reach there and lost possession too often. That’s something we need to improve.” The match was played in one of the most challenging environments in the Champions League, where losses can happen despite a team’s best efforts. “We can lose here, even though that’s not what we want,” he added. Looking ahead, Courtois emphasized the importance of their next two matches before Christmas: “We have Olympiakos away, which is tough, followed by Manchester City at home. We must keep pushing forward.”
Details on Tactical Shortcomings
Courtois reflected on the critical moments that led to Liverpool’s goal, noting that “some fouls are unnecessary, and for others, you need to hit the brakes because it’s a very dangerous attack.” He questioned whether the foul leading to the goal was warranted, suggesting that it may have been an exaggerated fall from Liverpool’s Jude Bellingham. “It was a good ball and a well-taken goal,” he acknowledged. He also pointed out that their passing wasn’t sharp enough, leading to difficulties in maintaining possession in the opponent’s half. “This is where we need to improve against quality teams, especially away from home,” he stressed.
The Challenge of Playing at Anfield
Courtois didn’t shy away from discussing the notorious difficulty of playing at Anfield. “It’s a very tough ground; you can lose here,” he remarked. “We need to fight and perhaps play better, but ultimately, it’s the details that make the difference in these kinds of matches.” He urged calmness within the squad as they look forward to upcoming challenges: “We are in good shape. After our league matches, we must win against Olympiakos in the Champions League.”
Highlighting his own performance, Courtois reflected on a spectacular save he made with his leg during a crucial moment. “I had to occupy space; I saw it was a two-on-one situation with Szoboszlai coming through alone,” he explained. “If I had stayed on my line, it would have been like facing a penalty—almost impossible to stop.” He opted to reduce the angle instead: “At two meters tall with long legs and arms, I just launched myself fully.” While not a conventional goalkeeper save, he noted that it proved effective.
As Real Madrid prepares for their next fixtures, Courtois remains focused on improving and ensuring they remain competitive in both domestic and European competitions.
