Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, has launched a fierce critique against Real Madrid, alleging a systematic campaign of disinformation orchestrated by the club’s leadership. Tebas’s comments come in the wake of a recent ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court concerning the distribution of audiovisual rights for the 2015-2016 season. He accused Real Madrid officials of distorting the court’s decision to exert financial pressure on La Liga.
On Friday, the Supreme Court annulled certain regulations governing the distribution of television rights, a decision that has sparked significant controversy. While Real Madrid expressed satisfaction with the ruling, claiming it mandates compensation of €8.8 million for funds they believe were unjustly withheld, Tebas vehemently disagrees. “It’s hard to invent as much as Real Madrid does. The decision does not state that they should receive €8.8 million or that other second-division teams should get €88 million,” he stated on social media platform X.
Tebas Challenges Real Madrid’s Claims
The La Liga president further criticized Real Madrid for neglecting their responsibilities during key meetings in 2015 and 2016, where agreements on television revenue were established. “They forget that this all began as bait for second-division clubs to prevent the anticipated effects of the royal decree on television rights,” he added, emphasizing that the narrative pushed by Real Madrid is misleading.
Recurring Disinformation Allegations
Tebas highlighted that this is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern from Real Madrid. “They have been running a disinformation campaign against their own spokespersons for a long time; this is their usual modus operandi,” he asserted. He pointed to past controversies, including failed Super League initiatives and unrealistic financial demands made to UEFA as tactics aimed at putting pressure on governing bodies.
The situation raises questions about the integrity of communication within Spanish football. As tensions escalate between La Liga and its most prominent club, many are left wondering how these disputes will affect both league operations and club relationships moving forward. Will Real Madrid continue to challenge La Liga’s authority, or will this latest confrontation lead to a more constructive dialogue?
