Karim Benzema: Real Madrid’s Lack of Connection Exposed

In a revealing interview with L’Équipe, former Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema provided a candid critique of the club’s current attacking dynamics. The French striker, who left the Santiago Bernabéu in 2023 for Al-Ittihad, emphasized that the issue isn’t a shortage of talent but rather a lack of cohesion among the star-studded lineup. This season, Real Madrid has struggled to establish a fluid connection between its key forwards—Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo.

Benzema’s insights come at a time when Real Madrid is navigating the challenges of the 2024-2025 season under head coach Carlo Ancelotti. Despite having a roster filled with world-class talent, the team has faced difficulties in integrating their distinct playing styles and ambitions. Bellingham, for instance, must embrace his role as an attacking midfielder rather than trying to assume the goalscoring mantle that belongs to Mbappé. Benzema noted that this disconnect among players has complicated their ability to perform cohesively on the pitch.

Understanding Roles and Responsibilities

The former forward highlighted that each player must recognize their specific roles within the team framework. “Everyone wants to be the best,” Benzema remarked, acknowledging that while individual talent is abundant, it can lead to conflicts when players are not aligned in their objectives. He argued that it is essential for players to contribute effectively within their designated roles for the collective benefit of the team.

The Dressing Room Dynamics

Benzema placed responsibility for this disconnect squarely on the players themselves rather than on Ancelotti’s coaching staff. “The coach can’t do anything,” he asserted, pointing out that it ultimately falls on the players to communicate and address issues among themselves. He lamented the absence of experienced figures who could guide younger talents like Bellingham and Vinícius through difficult moments on and off the pitch.

On Kylian Mbappé’s pivotal role in leading this squad, Benzema expressed confidence in his ability to deliver when it matters most. “He has to lead this team to titles,” he stated, emphasizing that while scoring against lesser opponents is commendable, true greatness is defined by performances in critical situations. “A brace or hat-trick against Elche is difficult,” he noted, underscoring that consistent game-winning contributions are what Real Madrid expects from its marquee signing.

Zinedine Zidane‘s Legacy

Amidst discussions about coaching futures, Benzema also shared his admiration for Zinedine Zidane. With speculation mounting about Zidane potentially taking over as France’s national team coach, Benzema conveyed his unwavering support: “Wherever he goes, he’ll win.” Their bond remains strong, with Benzema reflecting on how easy it is to connect with Zidane both on and off the field.

The challenges facing Real Madrid this season are multifaceted. As they aim to regain their dominance in La Liga and Europe, finding a way to harmonize their attacking talents will be crucial. Can they bridge this gap and transform individual brilliance into collective success?
