Real Madrid legend Marcelo reflected on the profound impact that Roberto Carlos had on his career during an interview with AS. The former left-back expressed that sharing the pitch with the Brazilian icon made his own experience at the club significantly easier. “When he was there, I just wanted to watch him train and play. That was enough,” Marcelo said, emphasizing the admiration he held for Carlos. He added, “He helped me in every way. I still talk to him, and when I see him, I get nervous.”

Marcelo also took time to praise the current generation of players at Real Madrid, specifically mentioning Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo. “They are incredible footballers, and even more so as people,” he stated. Having followed their careers since they were teenagers, he sees them as established stars rather than mere prospects. “At Brazil and Real Madrid, there’s a lot of pressure, and you have to produce every year. They’re fantastic and have a great future ahead.”

Discussing his unique playing style, Marcelo described himself as a left-back with an attacking mentality. “I’ve always wanted to go forward because a dribble is much better than a tackle,” he asserted. He believes that scoring or assisting is far more rewarding than simply winning back possession. His passion for football remains evident: “The same joy I had at the Bernabéu, I have playing in my living room with my children.”

When asked about the recent embrace between Vinícius Júnior and Xabi Alonso, Marcelo admitted he had not seen it but praised Alonso as a great friend and coach who has made significant contributions to Real Madrid.

Marcelo also shared his admiration for young talents emerging from the academy, particularly highlighting Gabri from Juvenil A. “He’s top; I like him. He’ll probably make it to the first team because he dribbles incredibly well.” Additionally, he expressed his fondness for Kvaratskhelia, a player who has caught his eye.

On being labeled one of the best left-backs in history, Marcelo remained humble. “I say that Roberto Carlos is the best left-back in history,” he remarked. He acknowledged that football is a team sport and that individual accolades should reflect collective achievements.

The conversation turned to Kylian Mbappé, whom Marcelo admires greatly. “I love Kylian Mbappé. He’s amazing,” he said wistfully about missing the chance to play alongside him.

Finally, when asked about aspirations of becoming a manager, Marcelo dismissed the idea humorously. “No, no. I already have enough with my kids; watching them makes me nervous,” he laughed. His focus remains on enjoying football rather than analyzing tactics.
