Mastantuono Sparks Selection Dilemma Ahead of Talavera Clash

As Real Madrid gears up for their Copa del Rey match against Talavera de la Reina, Franco Mastantuono‘s situation has become a focal point of discussion. The young Argentine, who joined the club this summer, is still searching for his rhythm after a series of inconsistent performances and injury setbacks. While he hasn’t yet showcased the continuity expected from him, he remains an asset that coach Xabi Alonso will likely need as the team looks ahead to 2026.

With the winter break approaching, Madridistas are eager to see their team perform well in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night at 21:00. Following that, they will face Sevilla FC in the 17th round of La Liga just three days later. Although Mastantuono only managed a brief two-minute appearance against Alavés last Sunday, he might find more opportunities for playing time this week. After suffering an injury in early November during a match against Valencia (which ended 4-0), the former River Plate player has been sidelined for four consecutive games against Girona and Manchester City.

Potential Starting Position Under Scrutiny

This Wednesday’s encounter could finally provide Mastantuono with a chance to demonstrate his athletic capabilities. However, his status as a Castilla player complicates matters for Alonso, who can only field three additional youth players in the Copa del Rey due to regulations. Reports from MARCA indicate that Mastantuono is still registered as part of the Castilla squad, which is why he wears the number 30 jersey. His inclusion could mean taking a spot away from another promising talent within the club’s youth ranks.

Balancing Youth and Experience

As Madrid navigates a demanding schedule filled with high-intensity matches, squad rotation becomes crucial as they approach the winter break. Alonso is expected to call upon six players from Castilla for this Copa del Rey fixture: Fran González, David Jiménez, Valdés, Joan, Cestero, and Thiago Pitarch. Among these talents, Jiménez, Cestero, and Pitarch are anticipated to start according to MARCA. This leaves Mastantuono in a precarious position—if another young player is introduced during the match, he may have to make way for them on the pitch.

The upcoming matches present both challenges and opportunities for Real Madrid as they look to solidify their standing in domestic competitions. Will Mastantuono rise to the occasion and secure his place in Alonso’s plans moving forward? Time will tell as fans eagerly await his potential breakout performance.
