Militao sidelined for four months: Real Madrid’s defensive pillar falls

The injury to Éder Militão, which will keep him off the pitch for approximately four months, leaves Real Madrid without a key defender renowned for his remarkable anticipation and aerial prowess.

Since August 13, 2023, every season has been marred by serious injuries for Brazilian defender Éder Militão. His knee injury earlier in the 2023-2024 season sidelined him for an astonishing 230 days. Just seven months later, his much-anticipated return was once again thwarted by a devastating setback: a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. After enduring an arduous eight-month rehabilitation process, Militão finally made his comeback during the disastrous Club World Cup semifinal against PSG, where Real Madrid suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat this summer. This marked a significant return for the player, who had faced two seasons plagued by knee issues. Unfortunately for both him and the club, it was his left leg that failed him this time around.

Militão’s Impact and Recent Form

Having reclaimed his spot as a starter at the beginning of the 2025-2026 La Liga season, Militão had established himself as an indispensable figure in the squad through consistent performances. His physical interventions, sharp anticipation, and precise management of duels made him a cornerstone of the defense. The former Porto player exudes confidence regardless of who partners with him in central defense. This adaptability is perhaps his greatest strength; with multiple attributes including offensive capabilities, Militão’s absence leaves a significant void in the squad—especially since no other player has demonstrated reliable qualities at that position this season.

Defensive Concerns Amidst Injuries

With Dean Huijsen and David Alaba also sidelined but nearing recovery, doubts linger over their fitness levels after shaky performances early this season. Huijsen has struggled with ball control, while Alaba has not managed to string together more than three consecutive months of competitive play since his severe knee injury in December 2023—a worrying trend for a player at 33 years old. Currently, Antonio Rüdiger and Raul Asencio are left to cover for Militão’s absence. Rüdiger, who underwent meniscus surgery on his left knee last April, appears to be on shaky ground, while Asencio has displayed inconsistent form in recent weeks. Neither of these players has approached the level of performance that Militão consistently delivered as a central defensive leader during matches against teams like Athletic Bilbao or in this season’s Clasico.

Xabi Alonso lamented the impact of Militão’s injury following a disappointing home defeat to Celta Vigo (0-2), stating, “Militão’s absence has really hurt us; we haven’t been able to recover.” These words underscore the Brazilian’s crucial role within Alonso’s tactical setup. Known for his aggressive dueling style and incredible speed, Militão frequently outmaneuvers opponents without committing fouls—thanks to his keen sense of depth management.

In his last five starts, Militão averaged an impressive score of 6.6 in our evaluations—remarkable considering Real Madrid’s struggles throughout November. Not only does he excel defensively, but he also contributes offensively with one goal and one assist this season. His ability to deliver precise long balls regularly aids attackers and occasionally sees him venture forward into opposing territory as an auxiliary striker. However, with his heading ability underutilized during set pieces, Real Madrid loses its primary offensive threat from corners—an area where they have struggled significantly this season.

The challenge ahead for Xabi Alonso is substantial as he must reconfigure his defensive line to maintain some semblance of stability without their most reliable defender until April. This situation poses considerable difficulties as the Merengues face mounting pressure from all sides.
