Recently departed for Saudi Arabia just before Kylian Mbappé’s arrival, Nacho Fernandez has thoroughly discussed the current state of Real Madrid. In an interview with the radio show El Partidazo de Cope, the former centre-back reveals the major challenge facing the new Madrid forward, now wearing the number 9 shirt.
A former Real Madrid legend, Nacho Fernandez spoke out about the ongoing struggles of his beloved club. Having joined Al Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia to secure his financial future before retiring, the 35-year-old defender remains closely connected to the Madrid squad. As a special guest on El Partidazo de Cope last night, the Spanish international pointed to the club’s defensive issues. Though he prefers to trust the team’s younger players to fill in for the many injuries rather than bringing in new recruits, Nacho also shared his thoughts on Kylian Mbappé.
Nacho’s frank insights

A genuine star of the current Madrid squad, the French forward is also facing challenging times. In recent weeks, the player who has always dazzled in front of goal has been notably lacking in luck. Silent in his last four matches for Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappé has become the subject of much discussion in Spain and France. While Thierry Henry believes he needs to adapt to his role as a number 9 to better support Carlo Ancelotti’s team, Nacho voiced his candid views.
On El Partidazo de Cope, the former captain of Los Blancos, who believes in the potential of the 25-year-old French striker, emphasised the need for a swift and essential adjustment. “Mbappé? He’s one of the best players in the world, but until he adapts, it will be difficult. He has the character and strength to become a great player for Real Madrid,” warned Nacho, expressing confidence in the coach’s ability to handle the situation. “If there’s a manager who has earned respect and trust to move things forward, it’s Ancelotti.”
The question now is whether the Spanish defender is referring to KM9’s adaptation to the number 9 role or his adjustment to Madrid’s culture and his new teammates. Either way, it’s clear that the young star from Bondy must step up quickly to truly kick-start his journey with Real Madrid. He’ll need to surround himself with the right environment, as one of his close associates suggests, to focus on what really matters.
