Roberto Carlos, one of the greatest left-backs in the history of football, has always been a model of humility. Asked to name the best left-back in Real Madrid’s history, the Brazilian surprised everyone with an unexpected answer. While many expected him to name himself or his compatriot Marcelo, the Madrid legend preferred to pay tribute to an often forgotten figure at the Merengue club.
Roberto Carlos, often considered one of the best left-backs in the history of football, surprised everyone with his modesty. Asked by Goal about the impressive performance of his compatriot Marcelo during his time at Real Madrid, the Brazilian refused to put himself forward. Instead, he chose to celebrate Marcelo and pay tribute to another Real Madrid giant.
Since his arrival at Real Madrid in 2007, Marcelo has left his mark on his era. His technical ability, vision and attacking prowess have made him a pillar of the club’s success. He has lifted numerous trophies, including several Champions Leagues, and has established himself as an undisputed leader in the dressing room. Roberto Carlos has nothing but praise for him. ‘He’s done a tremendous job at Real Madrid. He’s a great captain, a leader, and everyone has fun with him. He’s been the best in the world for many years,’ said Roberto Carlos. However, despite his high praise, the Brazilian did not mention Marcelo as the best left-back in the club’s history.

Roberto Carlos’s tribute to an unsung legend: José Antonio Camacho
When asked to choose between Marcelo and himself, Roberto Carlos opted for a mischievous reply. ‘The best left-back at Real Madrid? Marcelo or me? No, it’s José Antonio Camacho,’ he explained. A statement that may come as a surprise to the younger generation, but one that serves as a reminder of Camacho’s immense impact at Real Madrid. The Spaniard left his mark on the club’s history in the 1970s and 1980s with his defensive rigour, extraordinary stamina and exemplary leadership.
José Antonio Camacho may not have the same international pedigree as Roberto Carlos or Marcelo, but his influence at Real Madrid is real. A tireless defender, he played more than 500 matches in the white shirt between 1973 and 1989. His unwavering commitment, ability to block opposing forwards and natural charisma made him a player respected by all.
Camacho also won nine Spanish league titles and two UEFA Cups with Los Merengues. He also shone with the Spanish national team, playing in two World Cups and several European Championships. His love affair with Real Madrid did not end with his playing career, however, as he went on to become the club’s coach on two occasions.

A debate that will remain open
Roberto Carlos’ statement has reignited a debate among Real Madrid fans. If Marcelo embodies modernity with his attacking play and technique, Roberto Carlos symbolises power and explosiveness, while Camacho represents solidity and unfailing dedication.
In the end, every generation has its hero. Roberto Carlos preferred to showcase a player who left his mark on his era, demonstrating that football is above all a question of respect and transmission. One thing is certain: the position of left-back has always been well guarded at Real Madrid. Roberto Carlos could have nominated himself or chosen Marcelo, but he preferred to honour a lesser-known figure at the club.
