Real Madrid: Defensive Reinforcements Still Needed After Summer Spending

The defensive line of Real Madrid has been a focal point during the recent transfer window, yet the club faces ongoing challenges. Over €100 million was invested in defenders this summer, including Alvaro Carreras, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Dean Huijsen. However, only Carreras has emerged as a significant addition so far. Alexander-Arnold’s impact has been hampered by injuries, while Huijsen’s performances have not lived up to expectations, particularly as a central defender. Despite a promising start to the season that positioned Madrid among Europe’s elite defenses, the squad has suffered from a spate of injuries to key players.

This early season success was largely attributed to the solid performances of Dani Carvajal and the exceptional Éder Militão. Raúl Asencio also provided reliable support in defense. However, as injuries have taken their toll, the team’s depth has been tested severely. The club recognizes that further reinforcements are essential to bolster their backline moving forward.

Future Defensive Strategies

Looking ahead, Real Madrid is aware that David Alaba will vacate his position in 2026, and Antonio RĂĽdiger may follow suit, although a contract extension for him remains a possibility. Recent reports from ESPN indicate that Dayot Upamecano is no longer on the club’s radar due to financial demands deemed excessive. Similarly, Ibrahima KonatĂ© has been ruled out as a target for now.

Potential Targets

While Marc Guéhi has expressed interest in joining Madrid, he is not currently considered a viable option. On the other hand, the club is keenly monitoring Nico Schlotterbeck, whose contract runs until 2027. This long-term contract could facilitate a transfer as early as this summer, with the German defender valued at approximately €55 million.

Additionally, Real Madrid is closely following Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes. The 20-year-old caught the attention of scouts during the U-19 Euro Championship in 2024 and could be a valuable addition to strengthen their central defense. However, securing his services may prove challenging given that his contract extends until 2029.

The current situation demands strategic planning and decisive action from Florentino Pérez and his team. As injuries continue to plague the squad, can Real Madrid find the right players to restore their defensive stability? With a busy season ahead and ambitions high, every decision will be crucial.
