Real Madrid Faces Dilemma with Injuries Ahead of Key Matches

As the new year approaches, Real Madrid finds itself grappling with a significant challenge ahead of their upcoming clash against Real Betis and the Supercopa de España. The squad returned to training on December 29, and while the injury list is gradually diminishing, critical absences still loom large. Notably, key players Trent Alexander-Arnold and Éder Militão remain sidelined due to injuries, while Brahim Díaz is currently representing Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite these setbacks, the return of Fede Valverde, David Alaba, and Ferland Mendy offers a glimmer of hope for head coach Xabi Alonso. Valverde’s recovery from a foot injury has been particularly timely; he missed the last two matches of 2025 against Talavera and Sevilla. Mendy, who recently made his comeback to the squad after a long layoff due to a hamstring tear, is also back in contention. Alaba’s return from a foot injury coupled with muscle issues adds further depth to the team as they prepare for crucial fixtures.

Injury Report: Who’s In and Who’s Out

Currently, the injury list consists of three players: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Éder Militão, and Dani Carvajal. While Militão and Alexander-Arnold have already been ruled out for the Supercopa de España in Saudi Arabia, Carvajal is pushing hard to recover in time for the semi-final against Atlético Madrid on January 8. After undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee two months ago, Carvajal is optimistic about returning to action soon.

Tactical Implications for Xabi Alonso

The absence of a right-back poses a tactical conundrum for Alonso as he prepares to face Real Betis. With no natural replacement available, he must decide between using Marco Asensio or Valverde in that position. This decision will not only impact their performance against Betis but could also set the tone for their Supercopa match against Atlético Madrid. The tactical flexibility that both Asensio and Valverde bring will be crucial in navigating these challenges.

As Real Madrid gears up for these pivotal encounters, the pressure mounts on Alonso to effectively manage his squad amidst injury woes. With vital points at stake in La Liga and an opportunity for silverware in the Supercopa, every decision will be scrutinized. Can Real Madrid maintain their competitive edge despite these setbacks? Only time will tell as they seek to reclaim dominance on both domestic and international fronts.
