In a thrilling conclusion to 2025, Real Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu, showcasing their dominance in La Liga. Kylian Mbappé had the opportunity to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record of 59 goals in a calendar year, but instead matched it after netting a penalty in the second half. Jude Bellingham was the one who ignited the match for Madrid, scoring the opening goal just before halftime. Despite Sevilla’s decent performance, Thibaut Courtois proved crucial in goal, making pivotal saves whenever called upon. With this win, Madrid closes the gap to just one point behind FC Barcelona, who will face Villarreal on Sunday afternoon.

Real Madrid entered this match with an aggressive lineup, aiming to apply pressure right from the first whistle. The intent was clear: control possession and dominate Sevilla’s half. Players like Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, and Bellingham were all tasked with breaking through Sevilla’s defense. However, despite an early attempt from Fran García, the first quarter of the game saw little intensity. Mbappé, eager to make his mark and chase Ronaldo’s record, had a couple of shots that went off-target (17′, 18′). As has often been the case under Xabi Alonso’s management, creativity was lacking in the final third. The breakthrough finally came from a well-executed set piece; Rodrygo’s cross found Bellingham’s head as he outjumped Lucien Agoumé to score with a beautifully placed header (38′).

Bellingham Shines Bright

With a vital goal just before the break, Real Madrid took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Sevilla attempted to respond in stoppage time but failed to breach Courtois’ solid defense. After the interval, Madrid looked to capitalize quickly on their advantage. In less than two minutes into the second half, Mbappé created two chances for himself—one of which was on target—but was thwarted by Sevilla’s goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos (51′, 52′). Sevilla’s Isaac Romero also made his presence felt, forcing Courtois into action with some challenging attempts (52′, 56′). The tension in the Bernabéu escalated as both teams began to find their rhythm.

Nearing the hour mark, excitement grew when Mbappé connected with a corner taken by Arda Güler; his header struck the crossbar (57′). As the match progressed and Sevilla’s Marcao received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Bellingham (68′), Real Madrid found themselves with an extra man. Alonso opted for fresh legs by substituting Güler for Eduardo Camavinga (72′). Just six minutes later, following a brilliant run by Vinícius Jr., Rodrygo was set up by Mbappé in a tight space but saw his shot saved brilliantly by Vlachodimos.

Mbappé Makes History

In the 85th minute, Mbappé was brought down in the box after penetrating Sevilla’s defense once more. There was no doubt about it—penalty awarded! The Frenchman stepped up confidently and converted from the spot (86′), equaling Ronaldo’s remarkable tally of 59 goals during his time at Real Madrid in 2013. His feat is nothing short of extraordinary and highlights his impact since joining the club.

Despite appeals for another penalty moments later that were dismissed by VAR, Real Madrid held onto their lead comfortably until the final whistle. This victory not only wraps up 2025 on a high note but also sets up an intriguing chase at the top of La Liga as they look forward to continuing their pursuit of Barcelona.

With this result, Real Madrid ends the year strong and poised for challenges ahead. Will they maintain this momentum into 2026? Only time will tell.
