Real Madrid is actively exploring the transfer market as they seek a new central defender ahead of the upcoming summer window. With interest in Dayot Upamecano reportedly waning due to the Frenchman nearing a contract extension with Bayern Munich, the club has shifted its focus to Borussia Dortmund‘s Nico Schlotterbeck. The 26-year-old German defender has gained traction within the corridors of Valdebebas, becoming a prominent candidate for Madrid’s defensive line.
Since joining Dortmund in 2022, Schlotterbeck has established himself as an indispensable figure in their backline. His experience and reliability have not gone unnoticed by the Madrid hierarchy, especially as they look to bolster their defense for the future. A product of Freiburg’s youth academy, Schlotterbeck has earned 23 caps for the German national team, showcasing his talent on the international stage. Notably, he played a crucial role in Germany’s run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League last June and is expected to partner alongside either Antonio RĂĽdiger or Jonathan Tah in the heart of Germany’s defense at the 2026 World Cup.
A Modern Central Defender
Schlotterbeck stands out as a modern central defender, combining physicality with technical prowess. His ability to win duels and dominate aerial battles addresses some of Real Madrid’s defensive weaknesses, particularly in light of Dean Huijsen‘s struggles in these areas. Moreover, Schlotterbeck’s passing accuracy and vision allow him to progress play effectively by breaking through opposing lines, making him an ideal fit for Carlo Ancelotti’s tactical setup.
Transfer Dynamics and Competition
However, securing Schlotterbeck is not without its challenges. Unlike Upamecano or Marc Guéhi, who are set to become free agents at the end of this season, Schlotterbeck is under contract with Dortmund until 2027. To lure him away from Signal Iduna Park, Real Madrid will need to engage in negotiations with their German counterparts. Reports from Bild indicate that Dortmund is seeking a transfer fee of around €70 million. Interestingly, this amount could potentially be reduced if player exchanges are considered during negotiations.
Madrid’s hopes could be bolstered by the fact that Dortmund has shown interest in acquiring canterano Diego Aguado, which might facilitate a deal. Additionally, Schlotterbeck himself seems open to exploring opportunities beyond the Bundesliga, aiming for a move to a club that competes at the highest level in Europe. However, competition is fierce; FC Barcelona has also expressed interest in him and could act swiftly. As usual, Bayern Munich remains a contender for his signature as well.
The clock is ticking for Real Madrid as they look to solidify their defensive options ahead of next season. Will they make a concrete offer for Schlotterbeck soon? Only time will tell if this promising defender will don the iconic white jersey at Santiago Bernabéu.
