Real Madrid‘s plans for two new parking facilities near the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium have hit another legal snag. The ongoing dispute between the club and the Madrid City Hall over a project initiated four years ago continues, as local residents challenge the construction efforts aimed at improving access to the iconic venue.
Initially, the city council had designated two parking sites—one on Paseo de la Castellana and another on Padre Damián Street—to support the club’s operations. However, these plans have been met with resistance from a coalition of neighborhood residents who argue that the construction would exacerbate noise pollution and disrupt their quality of life. In a ruling from earlier this year, Madrid’s Administrative Court No. 30 sided with the residents, prompting the city hall to appeal the decision.
New Ruling Favors Local Residents
On September 20, the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM) upheld the previous ruling, once again siding with the residents. The court determined that the city had failed to demonstrate that the proposed parking facilities serve a public interest consistent with urban planning regulations. Specifically, it noted that the connection to the Bernabéu’s existing parking area did not satisfy criteria for broader community benefit.
Community Concerns Persist
This latest decision marks a significant victory for local advocacy groups who have been vocal about their concerns over increased noise levels associated with events at the stadium. These issues have already forced Real Madrid to cancel planned concerts at their venue, impacting revenue and community engagement opportunities. The vision for a multifunctional Bernabéu—encompassing football matches, concerts, and other sporting events—hangs in the balance as legal battles continue.
Despite this setback, it remains possible for the city to appeal to Spain’s Supreme Court, which could introduce further delays in this already protracted process. As it stands, local residents remain resolute in their fight against what they view as detrimental developments in their neighborhood. With both parties entrenched in their positions, how this dispute will unfold remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the future of Real Madrid’s ambitious plans is far from assured.
