In a nail-biting finish in Tenerife, the Real Madrid basketball team clinched one of their most thrilling victories of the season, thanks to an incredible last-second shot from captain Sergio Llull. With only 2.9 seconds left on the clock and the game hanging in the balance, Llull delivered a signature basket off the backboard that sealed a 71-70 triumph for his side.

The match at Santiago Martín was a true test of resilience for Real Madrid, who arrived with soaring confidence after five consecutive wins and nine victories in their last eleven games. However, they faced a formidable challenge against Tenerife, who were missing key players Marcelinho Huertas and Joan Sastre. As noted by AS, winning in Tenerife is always a tough task, especially under the intense atmosphere created by Txus Vidorreta’s squad.

Real Madrid’s Strong Start

From the outset, Real Madrid appeared to be in control, with Mario Hezonja and Facundo Campazzo setting the pace early on. The visitors jumped to a 12-6 lead before an explosive solo effort from Van Beck ignited a 10-0 run for Tenerife, turning the tide in the first quarter. Faced with increased defensive pressure and numerous turnovers, Madrid struggled to maintain their composure. Coach Sergio Scariolo responded by bringing in Llull and Usman Garuba, who proved pivotal in regaining momentum.

A Battle of Wills

As the game progressed into the second half, Tenerife emerged with renewed vigor, showcasing increased speed and intensity. Their strategy was clear: without their starting point guard, they would compensate through relentless effort. This shift put Real Madrid on the back foot as they continued to struggle with turnovers and execution. Even star player Walter Tavares couldn’t restore order upon his return to action. By the end of the third quarter, Tenerife had leveled the score at 49-48, creating a tense atmosphere heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw Campazzo step up when it mattered most, contributing six points and three assists just when Madrid needed leadership. Yet, Tenerife refused to back down; key contributions from Scrubb, Fran Guerra, and particularly Doornekamp brought them level at 69-69 in the dying moments of the game.

With only seconds remaining, Hezonja missed a crucial shot that allowed Tenerife to regain possession. Jaime Fernández was fouled by Campazzo during an offensive play and stepped to the free-throw line. While he converted one of his two attempts to give Tenerife a narrow lead at 70-69, it set the stage for Llull’s dramatic response.

Scariolo called a final timeout to devise a plan: double screen for Llull. As he received the ball on the right side of the court, he skillfully maneuvered around Alderete before elevating over Doornekamp to unleash his iconic shot against the glass. Time seemed to stand still as fans held their breath; then came the swish that silenced Santiago Martín.

Llull’s buzzer-beater not only clinched an unforgettable victory but also reaffirmed his reputation as a clutch performer under pressure. As AS reported, this win will be etched in memory as another testament to Llull’s legendary status within Real Madrid’s storied history.
