Toni Kroos, the legendary former Real Madrid midfielder, was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany last Thursday at the Santiago BernabĂ©u Stadium. In an emotional interview with Real Madrid TV, Kroos expressed his joy over this prestigious recognition, emphasizing that while he has received numerous accolades throughout his career, this particular honor holds a special significance in his home country. “I am very happy. This recognition is also for the Foundation, where we help sick children and their families, which adds even more value,” he stated.
The event was made even more memorable by the presence of his former teammates, a surprise that delighted Kroos. “I knew that Florentino PĂ©rez and the German president would be here, but I had no idea that my old teammates would come. Even Antonio RĂĽdiger, who is a great friend, didn’t tell me. It was a surprise, and it makes me happy to know I have such good companions and people around me,” he added.
A Special Homecoming
Kroos revealed his satisfaction at receiving the award in the stadium that has been his home for a decade. “When I was told that the event would take place here, I was very happy. This stadium has been my home for ten years and will always be,” he reflected, showcasing his deep emotional connection to the club.
A Fitting Farewell
Looking back on his retirement from professional football, Kroos recalled his desire for a farewell ceremony at the BernabĂ©u when there was nothing left to play for. “Weeks before, I mentioned wanting a farewell here when we were champions. It happened just as I wished, and from the moment I left home until I returned, I enjoyed every moment. What they prepared for me—the affection from fans, my teammates, the president, and the coach—was something truly special,” he confessed.
During the ceremony, Florentino PĂ©rez shared heartfelt words: “It is a great honor to welcome the President of the Federal Republic of Germany and his entire delegation to our stadium. We want to thank you for choosing the BernabĂ©u to honor one of our club’s greatest idols, Toni Kroos.” PĂ©rez highlighted how Kroos has strengthened ties between Germany and Spain through his illustrious career. He concluded with gratitude: “Today you receive recognition from your country while taking with you our affection and admiration. Thank you for everything you’ve given to Real Madrid and for your charitable work through the Foundation you created with your wife Jessica ten years ago.” This event not only celebrated Kroos’s remarkable sporting achievements but also underscored his impact off the pitch.
