Xabi Alonso: No Need for Public Backing from Real Madrid

Xabi Alonso has firmly stated that he does not require public support from Real Madrid to affirm his position as head coach. In a press conference ahead of the crucial match against Sevilla, Alonso emphasized the unity within the club, asserting that trust and respect exist between him and the management. Despite facing recent scrutiny after consecutive home defeats to Celta Vigo and Manchester City, Alonso remains confident in his relationship with club executives.

Real Madrid’s recent performances have been a rollercoaster ride. Following a strong start to the season, where they won 10 out of their first 11 LaLiga matches, the team has struggled with three consecutive draws in November, culminating in a disappointing loss against Celta Vigo. This shaky form raised questions about Alonso’s future at the helm, especially as club officials reportedly debated his position. However, victories against Alavés in LaLiga and Talavera de la Reina in the Copa del Rey have provided some respite. With a four-point gap behind Barcelona heading into the final match of 2025, pressure is mounting for a strong finish before the Christmas break.

Alonso’s Philosophy and Team Dynamics

During the press conference, Alonso articulated his vision for the team, saying, “At Real Madrid we know we always aspire to everything. We know what the final objective is.” He highlighted that achieving success is not just about results but also about how they play. The coach refrained from grading the team’s performance thus far, stating that assessments are best left until the end of the season. This perspective reflects his long-term approach amidst immediate challenges.

Injury Concerns and Player Form

The injury crisis affecting Real Madrid has been particularly severe in defense. However, positive news emerged as key players Eduardo Camavinga, David Alaba, and Ferland Mendy returned to training recently. Alonso noted that some players would continue their preparations into Saturday’s match against Sevilla. Additionally, he addressed concerns regarding Vinícius Júnior’s goal-scoring drought—13 matches without a goal—stressing ongoing communication and support for the young forward. “We talk to Vini; we work with him,” he said optimistically, indicating his belief that goals will come soon.

As Real Madrid gears up for their final fixture of 2025 at the Santiago Bernabéu, all eyes will be on how Alonso navigates this critical juncture in his coaching tenure. Can he lead his team to reclaim momentum and close the gap on their rivals? Only time will tell.
