Franco Mastantuono’s future at Real Madrid is becoming increasingly uncertain, less than a year after completing his dream move to the Spanish giants. Once considered one of the brightest young talents in world football, the Argentine midfielder now finds himself in one of the most difficult moments of his young career. Instead of preparing for a breakthrough season at the Santiago Bernabéu, he is facing growing speculation over a possible loan exit, with José Mourinho seemingly unconvinced that the 18-year-old is ready to play an important role in his project.
Just twelve months ago, the situation looked completely different. Mastantuono was at the center of a fierce transfer battle between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain after his impressive performances with River Plate. The Argentine starlet ultimately chose Los Blancos, believing the Spanish club offered the ideal environment for his development. His first months in Madrid were encouraging, as he earned valuable minutes under former coach Xabi Alonso and regularly featured on the right wing. His technical ability, creativity, and maturity suggested he had everything needed to become one of the club’s future stars.
However, his promising start slowly faded away. As the season progressed, Mastantuono gradually lost his place in the starting lineup and eventually found himself spending most matches on the bench. His lack of playing time became a major setback, ultimately costing him a place in Argentina’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Missing the tournament represented a huge disappointment for a player who had been viewed as one of the country’s brightest emerging talents just months earlier.
The arrival of José Mourinho has done little to improve the youngster’s situation.
According to reports from Spain, the Portuguese manager does not currently see Mastantuono as a key member of his squad for the upcoming campaign. Although the Argentine remains under contract until June 2031, Real Madrid are now willing to consider sending him out on loan to accelerate his development. Several clubs have already expressed interest, believing they could provide the regular first-team football he desperately needs.
Among the clubs linked with Mastantuono are his former side River Plate, Serie A giants Inter Milan, Ligue 1 outfit Rennes, Premier League club Fulham, and Fiorentina. Fulham’s interest is particularly notable because the London club is coached by Álvaro Arbeloa, who previously worked with the midfielder during his early days at Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Fiorentina have also emerged as serious contenders, viewing Mastantuono as a player capable of adding creativity and flair to their midfield.
Despite the growing interest from abroad, Mastantuono reportedly hopes to remain at Real Madrid and fight for his place. Unfortunately for him, the competition has become even tougher. Vinícius Júnior, Brahim Díaz, Arda Güler, and Bernardo Silva are all ahead of him in Mourinho’s attacking hierarchy. On top of that, Real Madrid are pushing to complete the signing of highly rated Ivorian winger Yan Diomandé from RB Leipzig, a move that would further reduce Mastantuono’s opportunities for regular minutes.

The young Argentine also missed an important opportunity to impress during Real Madrid’s pre-season preparations. According to AS, he started in the friendly victory over Alcorcón but failed to make a significant impact. Although he won a penalty during the match, his overall performance was considered disappointing, with observers noting that he lacked rhythm, sharpness, and physical condition. While he is expected to receive further opportunities in upcoming friendlies against Leganés and Fiorentina, time is running out. Unless Mastantuono delivers outstanding performances in those matches, his departure on loan appears increasingly inevitable, as Real Madrid’s plans for the new season seem to be moving in a different direction.
