In an eagerly-awaited clash between two Real Madrid legends, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema left their mark on Matchday 13 of the Saudi Pro League. It was an evening rich in emotion and symbolism.
The clash between Al Ittihad and Al Nassr on Friday evening had the makings of a legendary reunion. The two former Real Madrid team-mates, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, now stars of the Saudi Pro League, once again showed their class on the pitch.
Despite Al Nassr’s dominance in the first half, the home side failed to find the back of the net due to missed chances and a well-organised defence. Karim Benzema opened the scoring for Al Ittihad on the stroke of half-time. The former Ballon d’Or 2022 winner was always on the lookout for team solutions, and he rounded off a fine move with a precise shot. He took advantage of a back-pass from a team-mate to put Al Nassr in front.
Ronaldo responds immediately
The euphoria was short-lived for Al Ittihad. Cristiano Ronaldo, true to his leadership role, equalised within a minute with an unstoppable drive that left the goalkeeper helpless.
His celebration “Calma” seemed to be a symbolic response to his former strike partner at Real Madrid. Ronaldo, accustomed to decisive moments, once again proved that he can raise his game in big matches.
