In search of viable solutions for Real Madrid’s defence, Carlo Ancelotti, who maintains strong faith in Aurélien Tchouaméni, attempts the unexpected with young Raul Asensio.
Currently third in La Liga and in the knockout stages of the Champions League, Real Madrid could have been in a better position this season if the defence had not been so faulty. Following Nacho Fernández’s departure, who was an excellent partner to Antonio Rüdiger last season, and the early injuries of Dani Carvajal and Éder Militão—both out for the remainder of the season—the team has significantly weakened defensively. To salvage the situation, the coaching staff called upon young Raul Asensio, who had been playing with the reserves, to step in.
Ancelotti’s questionable defensive choices

From his very first minutes on the pitch, the 21-year-old defender immediately made up for Éder Militão’s absence. Strong in his duels and tenacious, Raul Asensio played several important matches at the heart of the central defence, including clashes against Liverpool and Athletic Bilbao. Surprisingly, Carlo Ancelotti, who is not particularly fond of young players, decided to move Aurélien Tchouaméni into the defence. Less prominent in his role as a number 6 this season, the French midfielder has, for the past three matches, been the new partner to Rüdiger.
In the recent matches where Asensio has not featured, Real Madrid have conceded five goals. Against Rayo Vallecano last Saturday during the 17th matchday of La Liga, Madrid’s defence was in shambles. From Fran García to Lucas Vázquez, and even Tchouaméni himself, performances were inconsistent as Courtois conceded three goals, all avoidable. While critics are voicing their discontent over the coach’s management—particularly his reluctance to trust Asensio, who has already proven he can establish himself in the first team—Marca has reported a new strategy that could appease the growing concerns.
Raul Asensio tested as a right-back

Since Florentino Pérez does not plan to sign a right-back to deputise for Lucas Vázquez, due to the potential arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold—whose contract with Liverpool expires next June—Carlo Ancelotti has tested Raul Asensio as a right-back. Ahead of Real Madrid’s trip to Qatar to play the Club World Cup final against Mexico’s Pachuca FC this Wednesday, the young central defender underwent tests to assess whether he could replace Vázquez, who is currently out of form.
Once again impressive, Asensio left a positive impression. It would not be surprising to see the young centre-back deployed on the right side of the defence in Real Madrid’s upcoming matches. Aurélien Tchouaméni, who remains a crucial part of the squad, is expected to continue in central defence, allowing Camavinga to play as a number 6. Fans now eagerly await Don Carlo’s next tactical decisions.
