Three months before the end of the season, major news from BILD in Germany emerges about Xabi Alonso. Expected to succeed Carlo Ancelotti next season, the Bayer Leverkusen coach is completely shaking up the plans.
In Spain, as well as the rest of the world, many believe that Carlo Ancelotti’s time at Real Madrid is coming to an end. Despite his contract running until June 2026—meaning at least one more full season—the Italian manager is rumoured to be on his way out for various reasons. From the lack of clarity in the team’s tactical play to controversial squad selections, Don Carlo has pushed many Madrid fans to wish for his departure. For months now, Xabi Alonso’s arrival has been discussed as almost certain for the end of the season, despite no official offer being made.
Xabi Alonso delays his move to Madrid

Excelling at Bayer Leverkusen, the former Spanish midfielder is seen as the most credible candidate by many in Madrid. While fans were expecting the much-anticipated managerial change at the end of the season, BILD, a usually reliable source, has reported quite the opposite. According to the German outlet this Friday, Alonso is unlikely to leave the Bundesliga this year. Becoming increasingly involved in rebuilding his team, the former Real Madrid player is now aiming for another season at the helm of Leverkusen.
To support this claim, BILD states that Xabi is searching for a new house in Düsseldorf. Having lived in a residence with his wife and three children for several months, Alonso is reportedly looking for a bigger home, which suggests that a departure at the end of the season is unlikely. Recently, Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, stated that the young manager, highly sought after by Madrid, is “involved in all the club’s plans, not just for this season, but beyond.”
With pressure mounting and Marca reporting that he could be sacked at the end of the season if he fails to deliver trophies, Carlo Ancelotti now sees his path clearing. With the backing of Florentino Pérez, who considers him the best coach in the world, the Italian manager is likely to see out his contract. Given that the Club World Cup will take place right after the season’s end, leaving little time before the next campaign begins, it’s now evident that no managerial change will take place at Real Madrid anytime soon.
