After Real Madrid’s controlled victory over Manchester City at the Santiago BernabĂ©u (3-1), the situation surrounding Lucas Vázquez has resurfaced. According to reports, Carlo Ancelotti has made a major decision for the remainder of the season.

Real Madrid has now entered a crucial phase of the season. Much anticipated in the Champions League round of 16 against the English champions, Carlo Ancelotti’s team held firm. In the two-legged tie, the Madrid side triumphed, scoring 6 goals to 3 conceded. Despite the offensive talents in Pep Guardiola’s team, the Madrid defence responded well, despite the absences of Lucas Vázquez during both legs. Replaced by Federico Valverde, Vázquez’s absence was hardly felt.

Carlo Ancelotti has his defence for the big matches

Given Federico Valverde’s massive performance on the right side of the defence against the Citizens, Real Madrid’s coaching staff is said to have made their decision. According to Relevo’s report this Thursday, Carlo Ancelotti plans to use Lucas Vázquez in “smaller” matches and continue with Valverde in the bigger ones. Solid and much fresher, the Uruguayan midfielder, excellent in all positions he’s placed in, now offers more security to the Madrid defence.

Against the Sky Blues, Valverde clearly showed that Real Madrid can no longer rely on Lucas Vázquez, who has disappointed in all the big matches this season. This is certainly a bitter piece of news for the Spanish right-back. At 33, he has reached his peak within the Madrid team and shouldn’t rule out a departure at the end of the season, especially with the possibility of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s signing alongside Dani Carvajal’s (32 years old) return.

If the information on Carlo Ancelotti’s plans proves accurate, Real Madrid should have a much stronger defence heading into the final part of the season. Knowing that the central axis is now solid with the performances of RaĂşl Asensio and RĂĽdiger, we can only hope that injuries don’t disrupt the Merengue team’s end to the season. In any case, Real is unbeatable when all players are committed defensively, as demonstrated against the Sky Blues. The coaching staff will need to be trusted, though they’ll have to make bold decisions in terms of player selection.
