It’s a sad piece of news that has just come out at Real Madrid. While waves of injuries continue to severely impact Florentino Pérez’s club, Marc Cucalón, a young 19-year-old player, has announced the end of his career.
Some injuries stand out among others. Marc Cucalón, a young prodigy from La Fabrica considered one of the most promising midfield talents for Real Madrid, was cruelly sidelined by a knee injury on 6 September 2022 in the Youth League, from which he hasn’t recovered. After two years (796 days) of relentless struggle to regain full health and the sensation to play football again, Real Madrid’s young gem has sadly come to the understanding that he will not be able to return.
Marc Cucalón’s emotional announcement

On his Instagram account this Tuesday, Marc Cucalón announced the end of his football career at just 19 years old. “I’ll start by saying THANK YOU to all of you. Sincerely. For all the support you’ve given me throughout this time. I joined Real Madrid’s academy in the summer of 2016, a child with a bag full of dreams, and I was very, very happy. The truth is, my life changed completely on 6 September 2022, when I suffered a serious injury during a @uefayouthleague match,” he initially shared.
As is often the case with knee ligament ruptures, now almost commonplace with the current cases of Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao, Cucalón endured an unfortunate fate with complications.
“After several complications, this injury forced me to make the tough decision to say GOODBYE to football, at least to the game I had always dreamed of playing. Over the past two years, I’ve fought with all my strength, both physically and mentally, and did everything I could to once again enjoy playing this sport, but I couldn’t fully recover. Still, don’t get me wrong: this is by no means a sad farewell.”
The bacteria that ruined everything

As reported by Marca, the complication for the Real Madrid starlet arose from bacteria that entered his knee during surgery for a ligament rupture, which was originally expected to keep him off the pitch for nine months as is often the case. For Marc Cucalón, the stubborn bacteria never left despite treatments to get rid of it. Reports indicate that this bacteria affects the cartilage in the joint and causes an infection as feared as it is rare in such cases.
Today, forced to leave behind what he loved to do, the young midfielder still manages to keep a smile. “After all, I think I’ve been truly privileged to have been part of the best club in the world and to have lived a dream. I’ve grown and matured, as both a person and a player. I’ll carry the values I’ve been taught with me forever, and of course, football has taught me, in every victory and every defeat, that you must always get up and keep fighting to overcome obstacles. Those lessons will be with me forever,” said Cucalon. Terrible !
