News travels fast in Spain. During the FIFA international break, Alphonso Davies reportedly expressed his interest in joining Real Madrid, according to Relevo. While this is promising news for Madrid fans, it could mean that Ferland Mendy might need to rethink his plans.
Once again, Real Madrid is on the verge of making a major move. Just as with Kylian Mbappé this year, Florentino Pérez’s club is on track to sign Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies on a free transfer. With his contract with Bayern Munich set to expire next June, the Canadian national team captain is being heavily linked with Madrid. Although FC Barcelona’s management has also shown interest in the 24-year-old defender, Real Madrid is currently in the lead.
Alphonso Davies sets his sights on Madrid

According to reports from Relevo, the Ghana-born player has confirmed his intention to join Real Madrid next June. Despite Bayern Munich’s efforts to extend his contract, Alphonso Davies reportedly only dreams of joining Los Blancos. Rodra, a journalist from Relevo, claims the deal is almost sealed between both parties. If everything remains the same until January, the pacey left-footer will sign an initial contract at the start of the year to confirm his intentions before joining freely and without a transfer fee at the end of the season.
For Real Madrid, this would mark another major signing in the works, in addition to the potential arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is also rumoured to be close to a deal. In line with their careful transfer strategy, Madrid’s management favours the ‘frugal’ approach of signing top players without spending a cent. We await official confirmation of this news in the coming weeks, but it’s clear that Ferland Mendy could be the first to lose out in this affair.
Mendy’s uncertain future

Recently extended until 2027, the French left-back, who joined Madrid in 2019, will face strong competition if Alphonso Davies signs. No longer as commanding on the left flank, as evidenced by his recent performances against Lille and particularly FC Barcelona, Ferland Mendy would likely lose his position as first-choice left-back if the Bayern Munich player arrives in June. Much more dynamic going forward, the Canadian is unlikely to start his Real Madrid adventure as a backup.
In short, this anticipated transfer could either prompt Mendy to depart or force him to accept a backup role. If the French defender decides to stay and compete with Davies, Fran Garcia would likely be the one to leave to avoid a lack of playing time. In any case, we await the finalisation of the deal that’s currently in progress.
