Real Madrid take on Real Sociedad this Wednesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at the Stadio de Anoeta. It’s a clash with a vengeance in store for the Basques, who will be hoping to topple Madrid’s co-leaders in front of their own fans. Despite a lacklustre season, Real Sociedad are relying on a solid defence to thwart Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Currently ninth in La Liga after 25 games, Real Sociedad are struggling to find the consistency needed to play a leading role this season. While the Basque defence is one of the best in the league (and the third-best in La Liga), attacking inefficiency remains a black mark. With just 23 goals scored, Imanol Alguacil’s men have one of the least prolific attacks in the league. At home, however, Real Sociedad are a tough nut to crack, and they will be hoping to capitalise on this factor to upset the Merengues.

Opposite them, Real Madrid arrive in high spirits. La Casa Blanca have put in some convincing performances, including qualification for the Champions League following a win over Manchester City and a 2-0 win over Girona in La Liga. Despite a full injury list, Carlo Ancelotti will be able to count on the return of several key players for this clash. Real Madrid are the logical favourites, but they will have to be wary of a Real Sociedad side capable of raising its game when it comes to major fixtures.

Changes expected in Madrid’s line-up

Despite the high stakes, Carlo Ancelotti could make a number of adjustments to his team. In goal, Lunin will start as he has done since the start of the Copa del Rey. In defence, the rotation could continue with a defensive quartet comprising Lucas Vazquez on the right, Fran Garcia on the left and a central hinge formed by Antonio Rüdiger and Asencio. The German defender, who was rested against Girona, should be back in the starting line-up.

In midfield, Eduardo Camavinga could start alongside Dani Ceballos and Arda Güler, with Jude Bellingham providing attacking support. The England international, who is suspended in La Liga, will nevertheless be able to play in this match. Up front, the duo of Vinicius and Mbappé should provide pace and danger in attack.

Real Madrid’s likely starting XI :

Lunin,Vazquez, Asencio, Rüdiger, Fran Garcia, Ceballos, Camavinga, Bellingham, Güler, Vinicius, Mbappé
