Florentino Pérez has made up his mind: Real Madrid will not be recruiting a central defender in January. The reason? La Fábrica star Raúl Asencio has earned his place in the first team and is redefining the Merengues’ defensive plans.
Florentino Pérez and Real Madrid’s sporting directors are banking on youth to bolster their central defence. Raúl Asencio (21), who trained at the Madrid academy, has convinced everyone with his solid performances. Thanks to him, the club do not need to look for an expensive reinforcement during the winter mercato.

In just a handful of appearances, Asencio has shown that he can live up to expectations, even in demanding contexts. On the strength of this explosion, Real Madrid are already planning to extend his contract to secure his future at the club. At the same time, the imminent return of David Alaba from injury, expected at the start of 2025, will strengthen the Merengues’ defensive line.
Alongside Antonio Rüdiger and now Raúl Asencio, Alaba will allow Real Madrid to approach the decisive phase of the season with confidence. This configuration also reduces the risk of overloading key players in the defensive sector.
Raúl Asencio’s bright future at Real Madrid
The emergence of Raúl Asencio will precipitate the departure of another central defender, Jesús Vallejo. With a contract running until June 2025, the Spaniard appears to be living out his final months in a white shirt. Jesús Vallejo, once considered a defensive prospect, seems to be paying the price for Asencio’s meteoric rise.
