48 hours after Vinicius Jr was controversially sent off against Valencia, Carlo Ancelotti has broken his silence. The Real Madrid coach shared his thoughts on the incident and his player’s state of mind. As the Merengues prepare to face La Deportiva Minera in the Copa del Rey, the Vinicius affair remains at the heart of discussions.

At a press conference on the eve of the King’s Cup match between Real Madrid and La Deportiva Minera, Carlo Ancelotti discussed the red card received by Vinicius Jr in Valencia on Friday. Although he believes it was an injustice, the Casa Blanca coach clearly came to Vinicius Jr’s defence.

‘We’re convinced it wasn’t a red card for Vinicius, it was a yellow card,’ he said. The Italian coach hopes that the sending off will not result in a further suspension for his player. Ancelotti also spoke about Vinicius’ state of mind. ‘It’s difficult to be Vinicius and to put up with the insults and everything that happens to him. It’s not that simple, but he’s trying to improve and persevere. Obviously, he’s sad about the red card and he’s apologised. We have to look to the future,’ adds the Transalpine.

Vinicius, already under pressure

Vinicius Jr is often the target of provocation and insults. These repeated attacks are taking their toll on the Brazilian player. Ancelotti acknowledged that his striker is working on his attitude. ‘His attitude has improved a lot. Can he improve further? Yes, but nobody’s perfect. He’s doing a lot of work with that,’ he added. The coach also spoke of Vinicius Jr’s talent: ‘So much so that he’s the best player in the world.

In any case, Real Madrid take on La Deportiva Minera this Monday in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey. Ancelotti insisted on the importance of this competition and wants to go all the way, given that he has not won several Copa del Rey titles. ‘With the usual enthusiasm. It’s an important competition. We’re going to respect the rival, the shirt and the competition. We’re going to try to give it our best shot and get through the tie. Over the last 3 years, things have gone very well for us. Playing in the final of this Cup is a very pleasant experience. So our aim is to reach the final,’ he confirmed at the press conference.
