Once again, Real Madrid left Rayo Vallecano with a 3-3 draw. After the disappointing result, Carlo Ancelotti gave his honest opinion of his team.

Real Madrid once again missed the chance to take top spot in La Liga against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday evening. Trailing after just four minutes, Carlo Ancelotti’s men thought they had done enough after Rodrygo Goes scored a sensational goal to give Madrid a 2-3 lead. But the home side’s captain immediately restored parity (3-3).

Despite the introduction of Vinicius Jr, Real Madrid failed to score a goal more than their opponents and left the Rayo with a sense of frustration. With this draw, Real Madrid have lost a golden opportunity to move to the top of the league and Barcelona still have a chance of retaining their position regardless of the outcome of the Catalans’ match on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s truths after the Rayo match

After the match against Rayo Vallecano, Carlo Ancelotti spoke at a press conference. The Real Madrid coach believes that the draw is a good result, especially given his team’s disastrous start to the game, which saw them go 2-0 down in the first half.

‘The draw is fair. I was very nervous at Mallorca and Las Palmas, but not tonight. Tonight I saw a team. We played a complete game. We made mistakes, otherwise we would have won 3-0. We don’t have a very big team. Rüdiger and Tchouameni are good in headers, but the full-backs aren’t very tall. Sometimes you have to suffer and, in that sense, we suffered. (…) I don’t want to talk about Vinicius. Last year, we drew here and won La Liga. To win La Liga, you have to win the games. If you can’t win them, you shouldn’t lose them,’ began Carlo Ancelotti.

‘I thought it was very complicated to find the balance, the commitment and the attitude. I was much more worried. We’ve rediscovered all that and we have the same attitude as last year and the same quality. Rodrygo and Camavinga returned tonight, and Alaba will be back soon. I’m expecting a very good 2025, with enthusiasm and motivation. We’re in the running for everything. Those two draws really affected me, so it was hard to imagine that we’d be where we are in December. We’re doing well despite a number of complications. Tonight, we started the game without many of our first-choice players: without Mbappé, Vini Jr, Camavinga, Mendy, Militão, Carvajal and Alaba. Seven. The others were very good, and when they’re all back the team will be much better,’ he added.

Real Madrid are now looking ahead to the Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar on Wednesday, when they face Mexican side Pachuca, who beat Al Ahly of Cairo.
