Real Madrid are preparing for a key match against Osasuna in La Liga, a decisive duel if they are to maintain their top spot. With three days to go before the return leg against Manchester City in the Champions League, Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press about the state of his team, the management of his players and the challenges ahead. Here are his full comments.
How do you see tomorrow’s game?
We’re very motivated. It’s an important opportunity to stay top of the table, but we know it’s going to be a tough game. We did well on our trip to Manchester and now we need to confirm our good form in the league.
Why is it so difficult for Real Madrid to win back-to-back La Liga titles?
It’s hard to explain, but the competitiveness of the Spanish league is enormous. Teams like Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona fight for the title every year. Repeating the feat is a complex challenge, as each season brings its own new difficulties.
A defence in need of adjustment: Valverde at right-back?
Valverde will continue to play at right-back until Lucas Vázquez returns. He brings a lot to the team and I enjoyed his performance against City. He loves this role and we’ll continue with him tomorrow.

Saudi Arabia, a threat to Europe?
The current situation in Saudi Arabia doesn’t surprise me. They are preparing for the 2034 World Cup and are trying to make their league more competitive. Their level is still lower than Europe’s, but time will tell how far they can go. As for me, why not go there one day? If I want to stay in football, I’m not closing any doors.
How are Rüdiger and Alaba progressing?
They’re making good progress. They will continue to work individually until Monday and will be available for the second leg against Manchester City. Lucas Vázquez should also be ready.
Is Asencio ready to be an undisputed starter?
Nobody is indisputable here. But he has character and performs well against demanding opponents. He’ll be competing with the others for a starting berth.
VAR: Are you interested in the referees’ discussions?
No, I’m not a fan of these kinds of events. We’ll see what comes out of it. The club has competent representatives for that.

Is Bellingham already a leader?
He has a strong personality and great character. He’s still young, but he has everything it takes to become one of Real Madrid’s leaders in the years to come.
Is Vinicius’ management a problem for the club?
I don’t have any information on that. What I see is a happy, motivated player who wants to make his mark on the club’s history.
The importance of collective sacrifice
We’ve all understood the importance of sacrifice. We showed that against Manchester City and now we have to maintain that intensity.
Are you tired of the controversy surrounding Vinicius?
Yes, I’m tired of it, but I’m not worried. Vinicius is happy here and we’re happy with him. It’s a subject that’s talked about a lot outside the club, but not inside. He’s focused on his performances and he’s starting to get back into top form after his injuries. Against City, he was under pressure and he made the difference. He’s going to continue in that vein.
