With Trent Alexander-Arnold set to join Real Madrid at the end of the season, one of the club’s former gold medallists has made a bold request of the Liverpool right-back based on his history at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid, who have lost Dani Carvajal for the rest of the season, want to strengthen Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. Florentino Perez has embarked on an ambitious project to build a young, galactic team. The Casa Blanca president has succeeded in signing such absolute crackers as Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo Goes, Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler, Brahim Diaz and Endrick, among others.

But Real Madrid doesn’t stop there. The club from the Spanish capital is set to welcome other recruits at the end of the season. We’re talking, of course, about Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies and, above all, Trent Alexander-Arnold, looking for a new challenge after winning it all with Liverpool. But in an interview with The Athletic, former Real Madrid striker Michael Owen was keen to offer some advice to his Liverpool compatriot Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been announced at the Bernabeu.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold needs to think this through before making a similar choice. He’s given everything for Liverpool, but going there would inevitably change the way he’s seen,” Michael Owen told The Athletic.

Owen “lost everything” at Real Madrid

In 2004, Real Madrid lured Michael Owen to the Bernabeu, where he was heralded as the future best player on the planet, due to his extraordinary talent. If this decision seemed like a consecration, the experience proved more complex for the former England striker. In an interview with The Athletic, the former Ballon d’Or winner discussed the circumstances surrounding his departure from Liverpool to Real Madrid.

“Real Madrid is an iconic and prestigious club, but it had never been in my dreams or plans. When I learned of their interest in me, I felt mixed emotions. I was honored that a club of this stature was interested in me, but it also gave me a lot to think about. I took almost a week to think about it seriously before making up my mind. I spoke to Benitez and Rick Parry, Liverpool’s CEO, and told them it would be an adventure of one or two years before coming back,” added Owen.

“When an opportunity like this presents itself, it’s hard to turn it down. If you ask people what the biggest club in the world is, many will say Real Madrid. It’s the ultimate reference for any player. The white shirt, the history, the Champions League victories, the mythical stadium… There’s a magic that surrounds this club. But when I joined Real Madrid, I felt I’d lost everything, I’d lost control over my career and how others would perceive me. “he continued.
