As Real Madrid prepare for the second leg of their Champions League play-off against Manchester City, Federico Valverde appeared at a press conference. The Uruguayan midfielder addressed a number of key issues: match strategy, his development as a player, and the refereeing controversy. Here are the highlights of his speech.

In your experience, what is the most important thing for this match, individually and collectively?

‘It’s a decisive match. We have an advantage, but we have to stay focused and work hard. It’s going to be an intense game, and we need to be solid in both attack and defence. On a personal level, it’s a privilege to be here, to contribute to this team and to achieve our goals. But the most important thing is the team. We have to stick together and give it our all.’

‘Playing full-back is a challenge I accept’

You are used at full-back in the absence of Carvajal and Lucas. How do you feel about this repositioning?

‘It’s a rewarding experience. I’m playing there because the team needs me to and I want to help as best I can. Of course, it’s not my natural position, but I’m learning a lot. I watch players like Dani and Lucas, who are benchmarks at the club. If I have to continue playing in that position in the future, I’ll do it with the same determination.’

Is a Champions League match different from a La Liga match in terms of refereeing?

‘I’m not here to judge referees. They’re human and they can make mistakes, just like us. But when they do their job well, they never get any compliments. Our aim is to play and win, whatever the circumstances. We have to concentrate on ourselves and give everything for this club.’

‘Manchester City are dangerous, whatever the situation’

Which is more dangerous, a Manchester City with their backs against the wall or a Manchester City full of confidence?

‘Both scenarios are dangerous. They’re a formidable team, capable of changing the course of a match in a matter of minutes. We played well in the first leg, but that doesn’t mean anything. We have to respect the way they play and stay focused from the first minute. We want to give our fans an unforgettable evening.

What do you think of Arda Güler and his integration into the club?

‘He’s an exceptional player. He has a bright future here. He’s still young, but he has all the qualities to succeed and leave his mark on the club’s history. We need to support him and help him adapt. I went through the same thing when I arrived. It will take time and patience, but he will become a key player for Madrid.’

You’re captain of Real Madrid. What does that mean to you?

‘It’s a huge honour. Many legends have worn the armband before me. It’s a pressure, but a beautiful pressure. I want to set an example, on and off the pitch. Fortunately, I have mentors like Carvajal, Lucas and Modric who help me grow into the role.’

‘We need to make the Bernabéu a fortress’

What does this second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu mean to you?

‘It’s our home ground. Here we have to set the pace, show our ambition and put on a show for our fans. We have a slight advantage, but that doesn’t mean anything. We have to play with intensity, stay focused and give everything to reach the semi-final.’
