As we learn of an initial refusal from Florentino Pérez and Real Madrid regarding the return of Sergio Ramos, the renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided a significant update on the matter.
Since Eder Militao’s serious injury (against Osasuna in La Liga on November 9th), Sergio Ramos’s name has been circulating at Real Madrid. Currently a free agent, the former Madrid defender wishes to return to help until the end of the season. At 38 years old, the Spanish veteran continues to train for one last challenge before likely hanging up his boots. Supported by several Madrid fans, including the legend Guti, Ramos frequently posts videos of his training sessions, as if to prove he is in great shape.
However, given the cold relationship between the player and Florentino Pérez, the Madrid president, this return, which would be a beautiful story, is unlikely to materialise. According to reports, Real Madrid, through José Sanchez, Pérez’s right-hand man, has refused Sergio Ramos’s return, which he himself proposed. Much stricter in team management, the Madrid leaders prefer to trust the young reserve players, as Nacho Fernandez also wishes, to finish the season.
“He will be ready to accept anything to play”

Since players like Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde can fill in on other fronts, Carlo Ancelotti is not really pushing for an urgent recruitment, which could undoubtedly be Sergio Ramos. As the idea of the return of the defender who made history at the White House (101 goals in 671 matches) begins to fade, Fabrizio Romano, the transfer market specialist, returns to the charge.
Like most journalists lobbying for Ramos’s return to Real, the Italian journalist indicates that the 38-year-old defender wants to experience one last thrill by playing for the Merengues. “Sergio Ramos wants to live one last chapter at Real Madrid. It’s not a question of money. He will be ready to accept anything to play at least once more in the Real Madrid jersey,” Romano confides on his YouTube channel.
The door still open for Ramos

A free agent since June, when he finished his contract year with FC Sevilla, the former Spanish international can continue to push with negotiations. Since he would cost nothing to the leaders, the veteran can keep hope for a return by January, especially if another significant injury occurs in the defensive sector by then.
With nine matches still to play this year 2024, Real Madrid should not remain closed to the idea of recruiting Ramos, who already knows the club well and can fill in on the right side as well as in the centre. Note that with the current trend, where players like Alphonso Davies are expected to arrive for free next June, it is hard to see the Madrid leaders spending in January to strengthen the defence. Ramos could indeed be a suitable option with a contract until the end of the season.
