On the verge of renewing his contract with Bayern Munich, Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies may no longer be a top priority for Florentino Pérez’s club. Determined to sign a player on a free transfer next summer, Real Madrid has made a Frenchman their new priority.

Calm has returned to the Madrid camp. After the major struggles at the start of the season with difficulties in scoring goals, Real Madrid has found their smile again thanks to Kylian Mbappé’s return to form, scoring prolifically in recent days. With Vinicius Junior still in great form, Rodrygo Goes rediscovering his best sensations, and, above all, Jude Bellingham regaining his sharpness in front of goal, Carlo Ancelotti’s team is thriving. This was evident in the club’s fifth trophy of the year, secured against Pachuca FC in the Intercontinental Cup final last Wednesday.

While things appear to be running smoothly, Florentino Pérez and his team are already preparing for the remainder of the season and, more importantly, next year. While awaiting a decision on whether there will be any signings in January during the winter transfer window, Real Madrid’s management is focusing on reinforcements planned for the end of the season.

The uncertainty surrounding Alphonso Davies

Among these reinforcements, the left-back position is a priority. With Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia performing adequately but not fully meeting expectations, Los Blancos have set their sights on Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich. Out of contract with the German giants next June, the young Canadian left-back is Real Madrid’s top target, as they aim to sign him for free.

However, in recent weeks, Bayern Munich, determined not to lose their player, has intensified efforts to retain him. According to reports, the captain of the Canadian national team is on track to extend his contract with the Bavarians—a significant blow to Real Madrid. To avoid being left entirely empty-handed in the event of an unpleasant surprise, Florentino Pérez has turned his attention to another player.

Théo Hernandez, Real Madrid’s brilliant Plan B

According to reports from several Iberian outlets and even the English platform CaughtOffside, Théo Hernandez, the stalwart of AC Milan, is the new name desired by Real Madrid’s management. Excellent with the Italian side for several seasons, the French left-back is reportedly being seriously targeted by Los Blancos, who, according to rumours, have already made contact with the player’s camp. Out of contract with AC Milan, the 27-year-old has yet to renew and could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. A former Madrid player (2017–2019, 23 appearances), Hernandez presents a strong profile.

With their new strategy of signing promising players on free transfers, Real Madrid keeps this option as a Plan B in case of a total failure in the Alphonso Davies deal. It must be said, the start of next year promises to be exciting with updates on the transfer market, as in just a few days, all free agents will be able to negotiate with other clubs and even sign pre-contracts. Real Madrid is set to cause a stir in 2025, as Fabrizio Romano predicted a few weeks ago.
