As Real Madrid prepares to enter the final stretch of 2024 with a clash against Getafe in La Liga this Sunday, news has emerged concerning Sergio Ramos. Frequently linked with the Madrid side, which is exploring all options for the winter transfer window, The Athletic explains why this move is unlikely to materialise.
Unlike last season, Real Madrid has shown signs of frailty this campaign. In just four months of competition, Carlo Ancelotti’s team has suffered four defeats—three in the Champions League and one in La Liga (against Barça). Severely weakened by numerous injuries, particularly in defence, the team is expected to consider all possibilities in January during the winter transfer window, as Carlo Ancelotti revealed during a press conference on Saturday. Among the names mentioned to bolster Madrid’s defence is that of Sergio Ramos.
A significant update on the 38-year-old veteran

Out of contract since the end of last season, Sergio Ramos has continued training, aiming for one final chapter before hanging up his boots. Following Eder Militao’s serious injury, which has ruled him out for the season, the former Real Madrid captain’s name has been floated by several Spanish media outlets. Keen to assist, the iconic defender reportedly contacted the Madrid management to offer his services.
Although Florentino Pérez and his right-hand man, José Ángel Sánchez, reportedly declined the offer, The Athletic explains on Saturday why this avenue is unlikely to proceed. According to the English outlet, Ramos’s strong personality is a key reason why Real’s management is hesitant to approve what could otherwise be a fairytale return. “Sources at Real Madrid believe that adding a strong personality like Sergio Ramos could disrupt the team’s dynamic,” stated Guillermo Rai.
With Jude Bellingham’s rising influence in the dressing room and Vinicius Junior increasingly viewed as a leader both on and off the pitch, Real Madrid fears that the arrival of a straightforward, outspoken Ramos might not benefit the team.

Additionally, the growing importance of Raúl Asensio, who has successfully filled the gap left by Militao, and the imminent return of David Alaba further diminish the likelihood of the Madrid hierarchy pursuing the former Spanish international.
All signs point to Sergio Ramos not making a comeback at the greatest club in the Spanish capital. While Carlo Ancelotti’s team may be struggling at the moment, the coaching staff’s priority is to restore confidence in players like Kylian Mbappé to score goals and provide more options in attack.
