Yan Diomandé Already Divides Opinion in Madrid as Comparisons with Lamine Yamal Intensify
Yan Diomandé has not even worn the Real Madrid shirt in an official match, yet the young Ivorian is already generating heated debate across Spain. As the 19-year-old edges closer to completing his move to the Santiago Bernabéu, expectations continue to rise, and comparisons with some of world football’s brightest stars have already begun.

Among those who have spoken most passionately about the winger is Spanish journalist Juanma Rodríguez. Convinced that Real Madrid have secured one of the biggest talents of his generation, Rodríguez believes Diomandé represents exactly the type of player Florentino Pérez has been searching for over the past few years.
According to the journalist, the Real Madrid president has long wanted to strengthen the right wing with a player capable of dominating matches at the highest level. Rodríguez even claimed that Pérez has been determined to find a footballer who could match—or even surpass—the impact of Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal.
Before deleting his post on X, Rodríguez expressed his excitement in very clear terms. “I really like Diomandé. He is exceptional. Florentino is obsessed with having a right winger as good as Yamal. This guy is even better than him, and he is only 19 years old,” he wrote. Although the message disappeared shortly afterward, it quickly spread across social media and fueled intense discussions among supporters.
The journalist did not stop there. In another post that was also later deleted, Rodríguez criticized Lamine Yamal’s performances during the FIFA World Cup. He argued that the Spanish winger failed to reach the level many supporters had expected throughout the tournament. In his opinion, Spain lifted the trophy mainly because of their collective strength and the outstanding displays of Rodri rather than Yamal’s individual contributions.
Whether those opinions are justified or not, they have only increased the spotlight surrounding Diomandé. The young Ivorian now arrives in Madrid carrying enormous expectations despite never having played a single minute for the club. Such comparisons can be both flattering and dangerous for a teenager who is still developing his game.
Inside Real Madrid, however, confidence in the player’s potential appears to be extremely high. Club officials reportedly believe Diomandé possesses the physical and technical qualities needed to become one of Europe’s elite wingers. His explosive pace, ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations, and willingness to attack space have made him one of the most exciting young attackers on the market.

Real Madrid’s recruitment strategy has increasingly focused on identifying elite talents before they reach their peak, and Diomandé perfectly fits that philosophy. The club believes his ceiling is exceptionally high and sees him as a player capable of developing into a long-term starter under the right guidance.
Of course, comparisons with Lamine Yamal will likely continue as long as both players remain among the brightest young stars in European football. While supporters will inevitably debate who possesses the greater talent, the reality is that Diomandé still has everything to prove on the pitch.
His adventure at Real Madrid has yet to begin, but the excitement surrounding his arrival is already immense. If he succeeds in translating his undeniable potential into consistent performances, the Ivorian winger could quickly justify the extraordinary confidence placed in him by both Florentino Pérez and many within the Spanish capital.
