In a press conference ahead of the 22nd round of La Liga against Alavés, Barça coach Hansi Flick clearly outlined his plans to reclaim the top spot in the table, which is currently held by Real Madrid.
Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are locked in a long-distance battle in La Liga. Before facing each other in another Clásico next May, the two Spanish giants are fighting for the league title. Currently leading with 49 points, Carlo Ancelotti’s team has a 4-point lead over Atlético Madrid, who sit second, and a 7-point lead over FC Barcelona in third place. This Saturday, Los Blancos can temporarily extend their advantage by beating Espanyol Barcelona in their 21st league fixture. While awaiting the outcome of that match, Hansi Flick has made his ambitions for the title clear.
Barça is not giving up on La Liga
Despite being seven points behind first place, the German coach is determined to do everything possible to close the gap. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Hansi Flick was very clear: “We need to put together a winning streak to keep the pressure on Real Madrid. Seven points is not easy, but we will keep fighting,” he stated before adding: “If we drop even 5-10%, we won’t win because they’re fighting to stay in La Liga. We have to show from the very first minute that we’re at 100%.”
It must be said that, given Barça’s current form, everything remains open in the title race. Despite the seven-point gap, one or two slip-ups from Carlo Ancelotti’s team could completely reignite the battle for the La Liga title. For Real Madrid, there is no room for complacency, especially with the intense fixture schedule at the start of 2025. After facing Espanyol this Saturday, they will need to put in a strong performance against Atlético Madrid next weekend to gain an important psychological edge over their other title rivals.
