Legendary Italian coach Fabio Capello shared his thoughts on Kylian Mbappé and Carlo Ancelotti during the presentation of the nominees for the 2025 Laureus Awards. With the atmosphere surrounding the current Real Madrid manager far from ideal, Capello’s comments have not been well received by Madridistas.
Since returning to Real Madrid in 2021, Carlo Ancelotti has never faced such heavy criticism. Having become the most decorated coach in the history of Los Blancos just a few months ago, the former AC Milan player is widely regarded as the club’s greatest-ever manager. Known for his ability to manage any squad thanks to his strong leadership skills, Carletto has pulled off some incredible feats. However, this season has not gone to plan. Currently third in La Liga with 54 points—his worst tally after 26 matchdays at the helm of the Merengues—the 65-year-old coach is under fire for his team selections.
Capello’s insights

True to his principles, Ancelotti tends to alienate young players in order to maintain good relationships with the senior members of his squad. With Real Madrid plagued by injuries this season, the former Bayern Munich manager has made several questionable choices, leading to disappointing results. Despite the ongoing struggles, Carletto has received words of support from none other than his compatriot, Fabio Capello. As an honorary guest at the Laureus Awards 2025 nominees’ presentation, the former Real Madrid coach from the 1996/97 and 2006/07 seasons expressed his backing for Ancelotti.
When asked about various topics, including Kylian Mbappé’s situation at Real Madrid, the 78-year-old was quick to defend the new Madrid No. 9 against his critics. “Mbappé is a great player. It took him three months to understand what Madrid is. Many people criticised him, but they had no idea what they were talking about and spoke nonsense. Now, we can all see he is an extraordinary and world-class player,” Capello stated.
“Ancelotti is the best coach in the world”

In his remarks, the former England national team manager (2007-2012, 26 wins, 8 draws, and 6 defeats) highlighted Carlo Ancelotti’s crucial role in Mbappé’s resurgence. “Ancelotti is the best coach in the world because he knows how to manage a team, understands football, knows how to position his players on the pitch, and makes sacrifices. He has helped Kylian Mbappé a lot, and that is to his credit,” Capello affirmed.
While these words will undoubtedly please the current Madrid boss, many Madridistas want just one thing: his departure at the end of the season. With Real Madrid’s situation becoming increasingly complicated, Ancelotti’s future looks uncertain. If Los Blancos suffer a Champions League exit combined with losing the La Liga title, the Italian coach will likely be shown the door.
