The Madrid legend, Sergio Ramos, opens his goal account with Monterrey, his new club, last night. Instead of returning to help out a struggling Real Madrid defence, the 38-year-old veteran has begun his Mexican adventure on a high note with a splendid goal.

Sergio Ramos, now donning Monterrey’s colours, wasted no time in leaving an indelible mark in Mexico. Starting his second match in Liga MX, the Spanish defender scored his first goal with his new team during a 4-2 victory against Santos Laguna. Having joined to bolster a team aiming to climb up the rankings and compete at the top, the former Real Madrid star is fitting in excellently. Justifying his lucrative contract (€5 million), Sergio Ramos continues to give his all on the pitch as usual.

Already making a mark in his first appearance in the Mexican league on February 23 (against San Luis, a 3-1 win), the former Madrid captain proved he has the energy to both defend and attack. Last night, he confirmed that he remains one of the most prolific defenders in history. With the score tied at 1-1 at the start of the second half, Ramos didn’t hesitate to move up into the penalty area and showcase his goal-scoring prowess. Perfectly served from the right, the 38-year-old defender catapulted the ball into the opponent’s net with an unstoppable diving header from a right-wing cross.

With this splendid goal, number 93 allowed Monterrey to take the lead and control the remainder of the match, ultimately securing a commanding 4-2 victory and climbing to ninth place in the standings with 15 points from 10 games. Before his arrival, Monterrey was languishing at the bottom of the table, but they are now rejuvenated with Sergio Ramos.

Real Madrid’s refusal benefits Monterrey

Before joining Monterrey, Ramos had hoped to receive an offer from his former club, Real Madrid, to strengthen the defence following injuries to Militao, Carvajal, and the uncertainty surrounding David Alaba. Despite his experience and undeniable qualities, the player waited in vain for an initiative from Florentino Pérez, the president of Real Madrid, who apparently did not wish for a return of the former captain. Consequently, faced with the absence of a proposal from his old club, the former Madrid glory decided to take his talents to Mexico. It took only two matches for Sergio Ramos to show why he is still a top-tier player.

While some thought Ramos would need time to adapt to Mexican football, he has shown that he remains a world-class player who knows how to make an impact. Solid in defence, the captain also brings his leadership and experience to an ambitious team determined to compete at the highest level this season.
