Just hours before the semi-final of the 2025 Spanish Super Cup between Real Madrid and Mallorca, Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out Luka Modric. According to the medical staff’s statement, the Croatian player’s situation needs to be closely monitored.
Praised by Carlo Ancelotti last Monday following his team’s victory against SD Minera in the Copa del Rey Round of 16, Luka Modric will not continue. Called up to compete in the Spanish Super Cup with the rest of the squad, the oldest player in the Madrid team has been ruled out at the last minute for the clash against Mallorca, scheduled for this Thursday in Jeddah. As we prepare for this fixture (which will be broadcast here), set for 8:00 pm (GMT +1), an official club statement has been released. “Our player Luka Modrić is unavailable for today’s match against RCD Mallorca due to a viral infection,” the announcement reads.
An absence unlikely to make much difference
While the news is certainly not ideal given the 39-year-old’s importance to the team, Real Madrid is unlikely to be overly concerned. With key players such as Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Dani Ceballos, and Arda Güler capable of stepping up, Ancelotti has little to worry about. Moreover, in recent weeks, Modric has no longer been an undisputed starter due to the excellent performances of the younger midfielders.
Against the modest Mallorca side, the Madrid team should have little trouble securing a place in the final, provided they apply themselves from the outset. Notably, if victorious this Thursday, Real Madrid will face their eternal rivals, FC Barcelona, next Sunday in the Spanish Super Cup final. After defeating Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on Wednesday night, Hansi Flick’s team, with an extra day of rest, will be eager to exact revenge for last year’s final, where Real Madrid triumphed 4-1, thanks to a hat-trick by Vinícius Júnior.
