There is an unprecedented crisis in Spanish refereeing. For months, Real Madrid has openly waged war against referees, who continue to disappoint with their performances. Through its official television channel, Florentino Pérez’s club has repeatedly criticised match officials. Ever since the Negreira scandal emerged—implicating Barcelona—Madridistas refuse to believe that there is no referee manipulation. This Saturday, LaLiga president Javier Tebas made a dramatic statement on the matter.
“We have had a lot of refereeing controversy”
In an interview with El Obrero, the head of the Spanish league made major revelations about referees. Speaking candidly, Tebas criticised Real Madrid for its approach: “We have had a lot of refereeing controversy in recent weeks. The federation has done nothing to find a solution. As for Real Madrid TV, it is Real Madrid that fuels the controversy, fabricates a false narrative, and calls the entire football system into question. All clubs complain, but Madrid puts the spotlight on the issue. It is an aggressive and manipulative discourse,” he initially stated.
According to LaLiga’s president, many Madrid fans are unhappy with Florentino Pérez’s methods: “I know many Madridistas who disagree with Real Madrid. It is a club that constantly whines. They complain all day long. They cry about the upcoming weekend, they will cry about the next one, and for them, everything is always the fault of a conspiracy.”
Analysing the state of Spanish refereeing, Javier Tebas believes the issue stems from how VAR is being used: “VAR is being excessively used… We want to change the refereeing system. If you were to ask other clubs, they would say that Real Madrid and Barcelona benefit the most, but they don’t have a TV channel to express it. Real Madrid TV is the only media outlet pushing this narrative.”
Tebas’ big revelation about Barça
After criticising Real Madrid’s leadership, the LaLiga boss turned his attention to FC Barcelona. Under scrutiny for alleged referee corruption for months, Joan Laporta’s club has yet to be cleared. Speaking on El Obrero, Javier Tebas made it clear that there is evidence to convict Barcelona, which has violated fair play rules.
“We believe there are sufficient indications and evidence for FC Barcelona to be convicted of sporting corruption in a trial over the Negreira case. If Barça were to be found guilty, we would not be able to relegate them, as the offences would be time-barred. I don’t make the laws,” said LaLiga’s president. This is major news that is sure to please Florentino Pérez, who remains convinced that Barcelona has played a role in manipulating the Spanish refereeing system.
